Chapter 9 - Down in the DarkThe sub-basement of the Centennial Museum was a labyrinth of concrete corridors, climate-sealed vaults, and historical relics dating back centuries. The air down here was always cold, smelling of ancient parchment and dust.

Mara and Edward sprinted down the narrow corridor, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. Ahead of them, the heavy steel door to the main archive server room stood ajar, casting a harsh, flickering blue light into the hallway.
They rushed inside.
Peter Maddox stood in front of the open server rack, soaked in sweat, his face twisted in a manic grin. He was holding a heavy iron wrench directly over the master digital control panel.
"Stay back!" Peter screamed, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "If I go down, I'm taking every single piece of historical data in this museum with me! Ten years of records—gone!"
"Peter, stop!" Mara shouted, stepping forward into the room. "You're destroying your own life's work! For what? Revenge?"
"For everything!" Peter laughed hysterically, his finger hovering over the override switch. "You think Edward cares about you? You're just a pawn in his hostile takeover of the entire foundation! The moment he consolidates power, he’ll drop you just like he dropped everyone else!"
Edward stepped up beside Mara, his voice calm, cold, and utterly terrifying.
"Drop the wrench, Peter," Edward said, taking a slow step forward. "You’re already facing twenty years for corporate fraud and embezzlement. Try arson and destruction of federal trust property, and you’ll spend the rest of your life reading history books through a reinforced glass wall."
Peter hesitated, his eyes darting between Edward and the heavy iron wrench in his hand. For a second, his grip tightened.
Then, from the doorway behind them, heavy footsteps echoed. Security Team Alpha swarmed the room, their tasers drawn and aimed directly at Peter.

"Drop it!" the lead guard barked.
Peter let out a ragged sob, dropped the wrench to the concrete floor with a deafening clatter, and fell to his knees, burying his face in his hands as handcuffs clicked onto his wrists.
