Chapter 2 - The Blood-Stained ApronThe roar of heavy engines idle outside the locked doors sent a shudder straight through the floorboards.

"They're here," Lucian said smoothly, not a single trace of panic in his posture. He holstered his suppressed pistol and reached into his coat once more, pulling out a heavy black leather jacket. He draped it over Mara’s shivering shoulders, covering the wet whiskey stains on her clothes.

"Lucian... my father's killer?" Mara choked out, her hands gripping the lapels of his jacket. The expensive scent of cedarwood and gunpowder clung to the leather. "Who sent them?"

"Your uncle," Lucian answered, his eyes fixed on the front doors. "Victor Moretti took your father's empire, but he could never sleep at night knowing the true heiress was breathing air somewhere in this city. For five years, I kept you hidden in the shadows, letting you live a normal life as Mara the waitress. But someone inside my ranks leaked your location."

Suddenly, the front glass windows shattered inward with a deafening crash. Heavy boots kicked down the locked wooden frame of the door.

Three armed men in tactical gear burst into the diner, weapons raised, laser sights cutting red ribbons through the darkness.

"Find the girl! Kill the traitor Vance!" a voice barked from the doorway.

Lucian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Mara by the waist, pulling her behind the reinforced steel counter just as a hail of gunfire chewed through the wooden booths and shattered the overhead fluorescent lights. Sparking wires rained sparks over the linoleum floor.

"Stay down, Valeria," Lucian commanded, his voice dark and commanding.

Mara covered her ears, crouching low amidst the spilled coffee grounds and shattered mug fragments. She watched in breathless horror and awe as Lucian Vance transformed from a quiet customer into a absolute monster of warfare.

He didn't fire wildly. Every movement was calculated, surgical, and brutal.

Rising from behind the counter, Lucian fired three precise shots. The silver suppressor hissed in the chaos. The first gunman dropped instantly, a bullet hole drilled cleanly between his eyes. Lucian vaulted over the counter, ducking beneath a burst of automatic fire, and swept the second attacker's legs out from under him.

Before the man hit the ground, Lucian snapped his neck with a sickening crack.

The third gunman panicked, swinging his rifle toward Mara hiding behind the counter.

"No!" Lucian roared.

He lunged forward, grabbing the barrel of the assault rifle, forcing it upward as a spray of bullets tore through the diner ceiling. In one fluid movement, Lucian drew a dark tactical blade from his belt and drove it straight through the gunman’s throat, pinning him to the doorframe.

Silence fell over the diner once more, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the hum of the broken neon sign and the sound of the falling rain.

Lucian turned back to Mara, his hands covered in fresh blood, his breath calm and steady. He extended a gloved hand toward her.

"Your peaceful life is over, Valeria," he said softly. "If you stay here, more will come. Tonight, you take back your crown... or you die in this apron."
