Chapter 6 - The Masquerade of LiesThe gun kicked against Mara’s hands, but her grip held firm.

BANG! BANG!
The lead mercenary crumpled to the floor, shot clean through the chest. Beside her, Lucian moved like a shadow, his dual pistols barking in a rhythmic symphony of death. Within thirty seconds, all six intruders lay motionless on the white marble floor, blood pooling into the intricate tilework.
Lucian checked his clip, dropping the empty magazine and slapping a fresh one in with practiced ease. "We move now. Through the subterranean tunnels beneath the wine cellar."
Three hours later, the storm had cleared over Manhattan.
In the penthouse suite of the Grand Regency Hotel, Mara stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror. She was no longer wearing her blood-stained clothes or her yellow waitress apron. She wore a stunning crimson silk evening gown, her hair styled in elegant waves, a diamond choker clasping her neck.
Lucian stood behind her, adjusting his tuxedo cuff links.
Tonight was the annual Syndicate Gala—the grand gathering of the underworld elite where Victor Moretti intended to announce his permanent takeover of the syndicate and solidify his deal with the Russian Mob boss, Nikolai Volkov.
"Victor believes we died in the safehouse explosion," Lucian murmured, stepping behind her, his reflection looming dark and commanding in the glass. "When you walk into that ballroom tonight, you aren't asking for your father's throne. You are taking it back."
"And what if they don't bow to me, Lucian?" Mara asked, looking at him through the mirror. "What if they only see a girl who served coffee at two in the morning?"
Lucian reached out, his hand gently grasping her bare shoulder. His touch was warm, sending a strange shiver down her spine.
"Then you remind them whose blood runs in your veins," he whispered softly into her ear. "And if anyone dares to look down on you... I will burn their world to ashes before they can blink."
Mara turned around, looking up into his stormy eyes. The boundary between protector and predator had blurred long ago.
"Why are you doing this for me, Lucian?" she asked, her voice soft. "It's not just about my father's order, is it?"
Lucian stared down at her, his usual stoic mask slipping for a fraction of a second, revealing a raw, fierce intensity beneath.

"Six weeks ago, I came to that diner planning to execute you myself to end the war," Lucian admitted, his voice dropping to a low growl. "But then I saw you smile at a homeless man when you gave him free soup. I saw how softly you carried yourself in a world that had been so cruel to you. That night, I swore to God that no one would ever hurt you again... even if I had to fight the entire world to protect you."
Before Mara could process his words, the penthouse door swung open. A shadow glided into the room.
