Chapter 3 - Shadow over the SafehouseThe sleek black armored sedan glided through the rain-slicked streets of the city, tearing through the midnight fog toward the mountains on the outer rim of the territory.

Mara sat in the back seat, staring out the tinted glass at the passing city lights. Her yellow diner apron lay crumpled on the floorboard at her feet, replaced by a dark wool coat Lucian had provided.

Lucian sat beside her, methodically wiping down his weapons with a white cloth. In the front passenger seat sat his top lieutenant, a scarred man named Julian, who kept his eyes glued to the rear mirrors, scanning for pursuers.

"We were betrayed from within, boss," Julian muttered, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "Only four people in our inner circle knew the location of the diner where you were keeping watch over Miss Moretti."

"I know," Lucian replied coldly. "And whoever sold her out will pay with every inch of their flesh. But right now, priority one is keeping Valeria safe."

"Don't call me that," Mara snapped, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and built-up grief. She glared at Lucian. "For five years, you watched me! You sat at my counter, ate my pie, drank my coffee, and watched me struggle to pay rent on a basement apartment! You let me believe I was alone in the world!"

Lucian stopped cleaning his weapon. He turned his head to face her, his dark eyes unreadable in the passing shadows.

"If I had brought you into the light five years ago, you would be six feet under a unmarked grave, Valeria," he said softly. "Victor held total control over the syndicate. He had every politician, every judge, and every captain in his pocket. You were sixteen, traumatized, and weak."

"And what am I now?" Mara demanded, tears welling in her eyes. "A pawn in your war?"

"No," Lucian said, leaning closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "You are the rightful Queen of the Moretti Syndicate. And I am the sword that will clear your path to the throne."

The sedan pulled up to an estate hidden deep within a secluded forest, surrounded by high concrete walls and armed guards stationed every ten meters. High-powered spotlights swept over the perimeter.

As the heavy iron gates swung open, Julian suddenly checked his phone, his face draining of color.

"Boss," Julian whispered, his voice trembling. "Victor just broadcasted a message across the underground network. He put a fifty-million-dollar bounty on Miss Moretti's head... and he claims you were the one who murdered her father five years ago."

Mara froze. She turned her head slowly to look at Lucian, her heart dropping into a bottomless pit.

Lucian’s expression did not change, but his eyes narrowed to deadly slits.

"Do you believe him, Valeria?" Lucian asked quietly.

Before Mara could answer, a high-caliber sniper round shattered the driver's side window, blowing Julian’s head open against the dashboard.
