Chapter 5 - Whispers in the DarkThe locket felt heavy against Mara’s collarbone as Lucian’s gloved fingers brushed against it.

"My mother gave me this," Mara whispered, her voice shaking. "It’s just a picture of my family."
"Look closer," Lucian said quietly.
Outside, the heavy thud of explosive charges being set against the mansion's front doors resonated through the marble walls. Victor's hit squad was preparing to breach the safehouse.
Lucian didn't flinch. He reached up, unclasped the silver locket from Mara's neck, and pressed a tiny hidden latch along its side rim. The silver backing popped open, revealing a micro-engraved metallic key code etched directly into the steel frame.
"This code accesses the central vault beneath the Syndicate Bank in Manhattan," Lucian explained, his dark eyes flashing in the hallway light. "Fifty billion dollars in untraceable assets, political blackmail files, and total control over the five families. Victor didn't hunt you down because he feared you, Valeria. He hunted you down because without this key, he is broke, bankrupt, and drowning in debt to the Russian Mob."
BOOM!
The front doors of the mansion buckled inward under the weight of a breaching charge. Dust and marble splinters rained down from the grand ceiling.
"We have two minutes before they break through," Lucian said smoothly, standing up and pulling two tactical handguns from his vest. He extended one toward Mara, holding it out by the grip.
Mara stared at the weapon. "I... I don't know how to shoot."
"Yes, you do," Lucian contradicted gently. "Your father taught you when you were twelve years old on his estate in Amalfi. You used to hit bullseyes at fifty paces before you decided you hated the smell of gunpowder."
Mara looked at the heavy black pistol, memories flooding back into her mind—memories she had buried deep beneath years of fear and quiet survival as a waitress. She remembered the recoil, the weight, the cold precision her father had instilled in her before everything fell apart.
Slowly, her shaking fingers closed around the grip of the weapon. Her posture shifted. The timid girl from the 2 A.M. shift faded away, replaced by the ghost of a dangerous legacy.
"They ruined my uniform," Mara said, her eyes darkening as a dangerous spark ignited within her. "And they killed the only quiet nights I had left."
Lucian's lips twitched into a rare, deadly smirk. "That's my girl."

The front doors blew inward with a deafening blast. Six heavily armed mercenaries charged through the smoke, fire spreading across their tactical vests.
Mara didn't hide. She stepped beside Lucian, raised the pistol with both hands, took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger.
