Chapter 17 - Maddie’s MilestoneIt was a crisp Saturday afternoon in mid-October when the entire courtyard of our Victorian home was filled with colorful streamers, balloons, and the sound of children laughing.

Maddie was turning ten.

She stood beside a towering, three-tier purple cake adorned with sugar stars and a custom fondant figure of Walter the stuffed rabbit wearing a tiny superhero cape. Over thirty of her school friends and cousins swarmed the lawn, playing tag and eating cotton candy under the golden autumn sun.

I stood on the back porch with my father, watching Maddie blow out her candles with a ferocious, joyful breath that extinguished every single flame in one heroic puff.

“She looks so much like your mother,” my father murmured softly, handing me a glass of sparkling water. “Resilient, fierce, and completely unfazed by the storms around her.”

“She had a good teacher,” I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder.

Suddenly, Maddie came running across the grass, her face flushed with excitement, clutching Walter tightly under one arm.

“Mommy! Grandpa! Did you see? All the candles went out on the first try!” she cheered, jumping up and down.

“I saw, sweetie,” I laughed, kneeling down to wipe a speck of frosting from her cheek. “You’re officially a decade old. Double digits! How does it feel?”

“It feels amazing,” Maddie said, her big brown eyes shining with absolute happiness. Then, she leaned in close and whispered conspiratorially, “And guess what? Walter says he’s officially retiring from emergency duty because nothing bad is ever going to happen to us again.”

My heart swelled, a profound wave of peace washing over me.

“Tell Walter he’s earned his retirement,” I whispered back, kissing the top of her head.
