Chapter 19 - An Open RoadThe winter snows melted into a vibrant, blooming Boston spring.

The maple trees lining our driveway sprouted fresh green leaves, and the garden beds beneath our bay windows burst into vibrant displays of tulips and daffodils.
I stood on the front porch with a cup of hot coffee, watching Maddie ride her bicycle down the paved driveway without training wheels, her laughter echoing through the quiet, sunlit neighborhood. Walter was strapped securely into his custom basket behind her handlebars, looking out over the world with stoic dignity.
My father’s sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb, and he stepped out, wearing a sharp grey overcoat and holding a thick leather briefcase.
“Morning, Harper,” he called out, walking up the front steps.
“Good morning, Dad,” I smiled, leaning in to give him a warm hug. “What brings you by so early? Another board meeting crisis?”
“Nothing of the sort,” my father chuckled, pulling a crisp, formal document from his briefcase and handing it to me. “Just a title deed transfer. The foundation board unanimously voted to officially sign over the deed of the original Vanguard estate directly to you and Maddie. No trusts, no conditions, no corporate oversight. It’s entirely yours.”
I looked down at the official parchment, tracing my fingers over my name printed in bold legal lettering. For eleven years, I had lived inside a gilded cage built on conditional wealth and transactional affection. Now, I owned my life—body, soul, and foundation—free and clear of any shadow.

“Thank you, Dad,” I whispered, my eyes stinging with happy tears.
“Don't thank me, sweetheart,” my father smiled gently, putting a comforting arm around my shoulders. “You earned every single brick.”
