Chapter 20 - The Horizon Belongs to UsThe sun was setting over the Charles River, painting the Boston evening sky in brilliant shades of violet, amber, and rose.

Maddie and I sat on the wooden dock at the edge of our property, our legs dangling just inches above the gentle, rippling water. Walter sat propped up between us, presiding over the sunset like a faithful old guardian.
“Mommy?” Maddie asked softly, leaning her head against my shoulder.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Do you think we’ll ever have to worry about anything bad happening again?”
I wrapped my arm around her tiny shoulders, pulling her close, feeling the steady, healthy rhythm of her heartbeat—a heart that was strong, protected, and entirely free.
“No, baby,” I whispered, looking out toward the endless horizon where the orange sun melted into the glittering water. “Bad things happen, but we know how to handle them now. We are safe. We are strong. And we write our own rules.”
Maddie smiled, content with the answer, and closed her eyes as the evening breeze gently ruffled her hair.
I looked down at the river, watching the gentle ripples catch the fading light. The man who had once tried to trade our lives away in an ICU hallway was a ghost of a forgotten winter, locked behind iron bars fifty miles away. The woman who had let doubt cloud her vision was gone, too, replaced by someone unyielding, unbreakable, and entirely unstoppable.

The horizon stretched out endlessly before us—vast, brilliant, and completely uncompromised.
And for the first time in my life, every single mile of it belonged to us.
