Chapter 3 - SHADOWS OF THE TRUST(Length: ~3,500 words)

Twenty-four hours after the public humiliation of Marcus Sterling at the Grand Crest Hotel, the video of Chloe being stripped of the silk robe and Marcus begging on his knees had gone viral across global media.
#VanceEmpireStrikesBack was trending worldwide.
Inside the glass-walled boardroom of Vance Global Enterprises on the 80th floor of the Vance Tower, seven individuals sat around an oval obsidian table. These were the board members of the Vance Trust—the guardians of a forty-billion-dollar empire.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance. To his right sat Isabella.
To Arthur’s left sat Julian Vance, Arthur’s younger brother and Isabella’s uncle. Julian was a soft-spoken, distinguished man with silver hair, framed glasses, and a reputation for being the quiet brain behind the family’s philanthropic branch.
"The media response has been overwhelming," Julian said, placing a tablet on the table. "Our stock rebounded by twelve percent this morning. Marcus Sterling's assets have been frozen by the SEC, and he is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center."
"Good," Arthur grunted, taking a sip of dark tea. "Let him rot."
"However," Julian continued, adjusting his glasses, "we have a serious problem. The audit team analyzed the breach that allowed Marcus to access the core funds in the first place. It wasn't a hack, Arthur."
The room grew instantly cold.
Isabella leaned forward, her eyes scanning the faces of the board members. "Go on, Uncle Julian."
"The security clearance used to override the double-authentication protocol belonged to a primary keyholder," Julian stated solemnly. "There are only three people in the world with that clearance: Arthur, Isabella... and my late sister's estate, which is managed by Arthur’s legal counsel, Victoria Cross."
All eyes turned to Victoria Cross, a sharp, impeccably dressed woman in her late forties who had served as the Vance family’s head legal counsel for over fifteen years.
Victoria’s expression didn't flinch. She set down her fountain pen and met Isabella's gaze.
"Are you accusing me, Julian?" Victoria asked calmly.
"I’m state facts, Victoria," Julian replied smoothly. "Your private digital signature was logged at 2:14 AM three weeks ago when the initial transfer protocol to Apex Acquisitions was initiated."
"That is impossible," Victoria stated firmly. "My encrypted keycard never leaves my possession. It is locked in a biometric safe inside the firm's vault."
Isabella watched Victoria closely. Victoria had been like an aunt to her after her mother died. She was the one who taught Isabella corporate law, the one who spent holidays with them.
"Victoria," Isabella spoke, her tone terrifyingly gentle. "Where were you on the night of the 14th?"
Victoria paused for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression that didn't escape Isabella’s notice.
"I was at my residence in the Hamptons, Isabella. You can check my personal logs."
"I already did," Isabella said, pulling up a file on her screen and casting it onto the giant board monitor. "Your vehicle’s GPS shows your car was parked outside the Grand Crest Hotel at 2:00 AM that night. And security footage from the private garage shows you meeting with a man in a tinted sedan."
Victoria’s calm demeanor cracked slightly. Her posture stiffened.
"I was meeting a confidential informant regarding Marcus's suspicious activities," Victoria countered quickly. "I was trying to protect you, Isabella!"
"Is that why," Isabella continued, keying in another command, "a private bank account in Zurich under the name V. Cross received a wire transfer of ten million dollars from Marcus Sterling’s personal offshore fund the very next day?"
Silence fell over the boardroom like a heavy hammer.
Arthur Vance stood up slowly, his heavy cane making a dull thud against the floor. His face was thunderous.
"Victoria," Arthur growled, his voice trembling with betrayal. "Fifteen years. I gave you power. I gave you family."
"Arthur, listen to me!" Victoria finally broke, her voice rising in panic. "It’s not what you think! Marcus threatened me! He had documents—he knew about the secret!"
Isabella snapped her head toward Victoria. "What secret?!"
Before Victoria could answer, the glass doors of the boardroom burst open.
Four federal agents in navy suits stepped into the room, led by Senior Special Agent Raymond Burke of the FBI's Financial Crimes Division.
"Arthur Vance? Isabella Vance?" Agent Burke announced, holding up his badge. "Step away from the table."
Arthur frowned. "Burke? What is the meaning of this intrusion?"
"We are executing a federal search warrant for Vance Global Enterprises," Agent Burke said coldly. "And we have an arrest warrant for Isabella Vance."

Isabella stood up, unfazed. "On what grounds?"
Agent Burke pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "For the murder of Marcus Sterling. He was found dead in his holding cell twenty minutes ago. Poisoned."
