Chapter 10 - A New DawnTwo weeks later, the crisp autumn sun bathed the sprawling gardens of the historic Fischer estate in a golden, warm glow.

The iron gates, which had stood shut and forbidding for over a decade, were now wide open. Inside the grand manor, the heavy velvet curtains had been pulled back to let the daylight flood into rooms that had long echoed with loneliness.
In the sunroom overlooking the garden, baby Leo—now plump, rosy-cheeked, and wrapped in soft, high-grade cashmere—slept peacefully in a brand-new crib.
Maya sat on a plush velvet sofa, wearing a brand-new dress with lace trimmings, carefully coloring in a large sketchbook with a pack of sixty-four colored pencils.
Nathan walked in carrying a tray with two tall glasses of apple juice and a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies. He set them down on the low table and sat on the floor next to Maya.
Maya looked up from her drawing, her eyes bright and filled with a security she had never known before.
“Mr. Nathan?” she asked, tilting her head.
“Call me Uncle Nathan, Maya,” he corrected gently, smiling for the first time in as long as he could remember.
“Uncle Nathan,” she repeated, tasting the words. “Are we ever going back to the box?”
Nathan reached out and gently ruffled her hair. He looked past her, through the enormous French doors, out toward the city skyline where Westfield Square sat somewhere in the distance—cold, indifferent, and cruel to those it forgot.

“Never,” Nathan said firmly, his voice steady and warm. “Nobody is ever going to be cold again.”
Maya smiled, grabbed a blue crayon, and proudly held up her drawing for him to see: a large cardboard box, transformed into a magnificent castle with glowing windows and two little figures standing safely inside, guarded by a giant golden shield.
