Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Spirit

Clara stared at the legal document resting on her table, then looked back up at Adam. For a moment, the temptation hung heavily in the air—the ultimate revenge. To take everything the Hamilton family owned, to strip them of their wealth just as they had tried to strip her of her dignity, to watch the mighty kneel before the humble maid they had abused.
Slowly, deliberately, Clara picked up the document, folded it in half, and handed it back to him.
Adam looked stunned, pulling his hands back as if the paper were burning him. "What... what are you doing? Take it! It's yours by right! It's reparations for what my family put you through!"
"I don't want your charity, Adam," Clara said, her voice steady, filled with a quiet strength that commanded the entire room. "And I certainly don't want your guilt. If I took your wealth just because you handed it to me out of despair, I would be no better than your mother—taking things that don't belong to me, wielding power over others just because I can."
"Then what do you want?" Adam pleaded, his voice breaking. "How do I fix this? How do I make you see that I'm truly sorry?"
"You can't fix the past," Clara said softly, stepping aside to let him see the stacks of legal briefs and whistleblower reports covering her kitchen table. "You want to make things right? Don't hand me your empire. Stand up in a court of law as a witness for the prosecution. Testify against your mother’s corrupt network. Help us return the pension funds you and your board members neglected to the workers who built your fortune. That is how you earn your dignity back, Mr. Hamilton. Not by writing checks to me."
Adam stared at her, the last vestiges of his old, arrogant self finally burning away, replaced by a profound, humbling respect. He didn't take the document back; instead, he laid it gently on the edge of the table, not as an offering of surrender, but as a marker of accountability.
"I'll do it," Adam whispered. "Every word. Every ledger. I will testify against her."

Before he turned to leave, he paused at the doorway, looking back with a soft, melancholic smile. "Idan draws a picture of you every single night before he goes to sleep. He misses you, Clara. We both do."
"Tell him I miss him too," Clara replied quietly. "And tell him I'll see him soon."
