Chapter 14 - An Unexpected Visitor

It was late evening when a sharp, hesitant knock sounded at Clara’s apartment door. Maya had already left for the night, leaving Clara surrounded by financial spreadsheets, legal briefs, and notes detailing the Hamilton Corporation’s hidden accounts.

Opening the door, Clara froze.

Standing in the dim hallway was Adam Hamilton. He looked entirely different from the impeccably tailored corporate titan who had sat silently in the courtroom weeks ago. His tie was loosened, his hair was slightly disheveled, and his eyes carried the deep, hollow exhaustion of a man whose entire world had crumbled around him.

"Clara," he breathed, his voice barely above a whisper. "May I... may I come in?"

Clara stood blocking the doorway for a long moment, her expression unreadable. The anger she had felt during the trial had evolved into a cold, unbreakable self-reliance. She didn't hate him anymore; she simply didn't need him.

"You shouldn't be here, Mr. Hamilton," Clara said evenly, her hand resting on the edge of the door. "If your lawyers see you visiting the plaintiff in an active multi-million-dollar lawsuit, they'll have a fit."

"I don't care about the lawyers. I don't care about the company anymore," Adam said, taking a slow step forward, his hands raised palms-up in a gesture of total surrender. "The board stripped me of my title this afternoon. Federal agents seized the corporate accounts. My mother is facing prison. Everything my family built over three generations has collapsed in less than a month."

"Because you built it on lies, secrets, and the blood of people your mother stepped on," Clara replied without flinching.

Adam lowered his head, tears stinging the corners of his eyes. "You're right. I was blind. I was a coward hiding behind my mother's shadow, too afraid to stand up for what was right because it was easier to look the other way. I came here not to ask for favors, Clara... but to apologize. And to hand you this."

He reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, notarized legal document, placing it gently on the small table near the door.

"What is this?" Clara asked, looking down at the paper.

"It’s a complete transfer of ownership for the Hamilton estate and all remaining private holdings," Adam said quietly. "I’m pleading guilty to negligence regarding the corporate oversight. I’m stepping down permanently. I want you to have it all. Every cent, every brick, every share. It belongs to you now."
