Chapter 17 - A Promise Kept

A week after the verdict, the heavy iron gates of the Hamilton estate stood open. The mansion was no longer a fortress of cold tyranny; it was quiet, bathed in the golden light of late afternoon autumn leaves falling across the manicured lawns.

Clara walked up the stone steps, her canvas bag slung over her shoulder—not as a maid seeking employment, but as an invited guest.

The front door swung open, and before she could even take a breath, a small streak of energy came flying down the hall.

"Clara!"

Idan slammed straight into her waist, wrapping his small arms around her so tightly she nearly lost her balance. He burst into tears of pure joy, burying his face in her coat just as he had done in the courtroom months ago.

"You came back! You came back!" Idan sobbed happily.

Clara knelt down, wrapping her arms around the little boy and holding him close, letting her own tears of relief fall freely into his hair. "I promised you I would, my sweet boy. I always keep my promises."

Standing behind Idan in the foyer was Adam. He looked older, simpler, dressed in a plain cotton shirt without the suffocating armor of corporate ties and expensive suits. He didn't approach immediately; he kept a respectful distance, his expression one of profound gratitude and humility.

"Welcome back, Clara," Adam said softly, his voice steady. "The house... it’s finally starting to feel like a home again."

"Thank you, Adam," Clara said, standing up while keeping one hand resting gently on Idan’s shoulder. "I'm not here to work as your maid. But I am here to make sure this boy grows up knowing what true honor looks like."

Adam smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years. "Take all the time you need. We're just glad you're home."
