Chapter 12 - The Auditor's Ghost

The faded newspaper clipping trembled in Clara’s hands. The headline read: ‘Local Accountant Dies in Suspected Warehouse Fire.’ The date printed at the top was exactly three weeks before her family was torn apart, forcing her into a childhood of quiet struggle and eventually leading her to the doors of the Hamilton mansion as a domestic worker.
"My father... he didn't die in an accident?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking as the ghosts of her past surged violently back to life.
"The official report called it an electrical fault," Maya explained, her tone softening with empathy. "But when the state investigators searched Margaret’s private estate files following the raid on her safe, they found a digital backup of an old email chain between Margaret and a corporate fixer. Your father was about to blow the whistle on millions of dollars siphoned from worker pension funds into offshore accounts. Margaret silenced him. And when you walked into her house years later looking for employment, she didn't hire you out of charity. She hired you to keep an eye on you—to make sure you never stumbled upon the truth."
The room spun around Clara. The exhaustion, the betrayal, the sudden reversal of fortune—it all collided into a blinding wave of realization. Every cold stare Margaret had ever given her wasn't just class snobbery; it was the quiet paranoia of a murderer looking at the daughter of the man she had destroyed.
"She thought she was untouchable," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave, losing its tremor and hardening into something terrifyingly resolute. "She thought she could trap me in her mansion, humiliate me in front of the world, and throw me away like trash."
"And she nearly succeeded," Maya said. "Adam is a weak link. He spent his whole life cowering under his mother's thumb, letting her dictate his household, his business, and his parenting. Even now, he thinks throwing money at you can erase what his family did."
Clara stood up, walking over to the small window that looked out over the dim, neon-lit street below. She thought of little Idan—the sweet, brave boy who had run into a courtroom to save her. He was the only innocent soul trapped inside that fortress of greed and deception.

"No more running," Clara said, turning around to face the intern. "If Margaret wants a war, she's going to get one. I want every single file, every financial record, and every piece of evidence your firm has on the Hamilton Corporation's embezzlement scheme. We aren't just suing for wrongful accusation. We are dismantling their entire empire."
Maya smiled, a fierce, predatory grin. "Welcome to the real game, Clara. Let's show them what a maid can do when she stops cleaning up their mess and starts burning the house down."
