Chapter 4 - THE ASHES OF BLACKWOODBy 3:00 AM, the luxury hotel ballroom was completely empty, save for scattered champagne flutes, crushed rose petals, and overturned chairs. The glittering crystal chandelier overhead looked less like a crown now and more like a massive, frozen tear.

My father was discharged from the private clinic around dawn, pale and exhausted, but breathing steadily. When Nathan and I walked into his hospital room, he tried to sit up, his eyes swimming with tears.
“Amelia... I’m so sorry,” he choked out, his voice cracking. “I was foolish. I trusted them. I put our entire livelihood at risk because I thought Daniel was a legitimate partner.”
I sat on the edge of his hospital bed, gently taking his trembling hand in mine. “Dad, look at me. It’s over. The federal investigators have frozen all of Blackwood Enterprises’ assets pending an emergency receivership audit. Richard has agreed to step down and turn over his voting shares to a restructuring board that will protect your company.”
Dad stared at me in disbelief. “Richard did that?”
“He realized his son was a monster, and he wanted to make things right before it was too late,” I said softly.
Just then, the door to the hospital room opened quietly. Richard Blackwood stood in the doorway, looking older, smaller, and infinitely more tired than he had the night before. He wasn't wearing his custom Italian suit; he wore a simple dark trench coat, his shoulders slightly hunched.
“May I come in?” Richard asked quietly.
Dad stiffened, pulling his hand from mine slightly, but Richard held up a palm, empty and open.
“I don't expect forgiveness,” Richard said, walking slowly toward the foot of the bed. “Not from you, Robert, and certainly not from you, Amelia. I raised a snake, and I turned a blind eye to his venom for far too long because I cared more about the balance sheet than my own moral compass.”
“Why are you here, Richard?” I asked, my voice remaining neutral, guarded.
“To sign this,” Richard said, pulling a heavy legal document from his coat pocket and laying it flat on the bedside table.
I looked down at the header.
VOLUNTARY TRANSFER OF BLACKWOOD HOLDINGS AND RESTORATION OF ASSETS TO INDEPENDENT SUPPLIERS.
“With Daniel and Evelyn facing up to twenty years in federal prison, and the company under federal investigation, the board needed a clean break,” Richard explained, looking directly at my father. “This document completely erases your company’s debt to Blackwood Enterprises, restores your proprietary drone designs back to your exclusive patent holding, and transfers forty percent voting control of our parent corporation directly to Amelia as compensation for damages.”
May you like
Dad stared at the paper, his mouth slightly open. “Amelia... forty percent? That makes you the single largest shareholder of Blackwood Enterprises.”
“It’s not just a gift,” Richard said, his eyes meeting mine with a quiet, solemn intensity. “It’s a weapon. Use it to rebuild what my family tried to destroy. And... if you ever want to tear the remaining sixty percent down to the ground, you now have the voting power to do it.”
