Chapter 5 - THE SUNRISE OVER THE HARBORThree weeks later, the morning sun rose over the New York harbor, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of gold, amber, and deep violet.

I stood on the wraparound balcony of my new corner office on the 42nd floor of the Blackwood Tower—soon to be rebranded as Sterling & Blackwood Aviation. Below me, the city hummed with life, completely indifferent to the corporate earthquakes that had reshaped its skyline.

The door to my office opened softly, and Nathan walked in holding two steaming cups of black coffee. He handed one to me, leaning against the glass railing beside me.

“Federal indictment papers were officially filed against Daniel and Evelyn this morning,” Nathan said, taking a sip of his coffee. “No bail. The judge cited flight risk and severe psychological coercion. Marissa is cooperating with the prosecution in exchange for a reduced sentence; she’s spilling every detail about their offshore accounts.”

I looked out at the horizon, watching a container ship cut a clean white wake through the dark water. “And Daniel?”

“He refused his first three prison visitation requests,” Nathan smiled faintly. “He’s currently housed in maximum security upstate, wearing an orange jumpsuit instead of a tailored tuxedo. Rumor has it he spends most of his day staring at the concrete walls, still trying to figure out where his flawless plan went wrong.”

I took a slow sip of the coffee, letting the warmth steady my chest. I didn't feel broken anymore. The humiliation of that night under the crystal chandelier felt like a lifetime ago—a lifetime belonging to a frightened girl who didn't know her own strength.

“How’s Dad?” I asked.

“Back at the factory,” Nathan laughed. “Already reviewing new aerospace supply contracts with three major international carriers. He looks ten years younger, Amelia. The stress is gone.”

My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk inside. I walked over, picking it up.

It was a notification from the corporate legal board. The final signature authorizing the complete restructuring of the parent company was ready for my review.

My name—Amelia Sterling—was embossed at the top of the digital signature line. No hyphenated Blackwood. Just my own name, earned through fire, betrayal, and unyielding survival.
