Chapter 2 - The High Council Assembles

The private transatlantic flight was a blur of encrypted satellite communications and stark silence. Captain Vance sat across from me, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier across the mahogany table.

"Read this, Commander," he instructed.

I opened the folder. Inside were certified copies of the documents Rachel had submitted to the Royal Registrar of Marriages. There were forged medical letters bearing fake signatures from psychiatric facilities, manipulated discharge papers stamped with fabricated military seals, and a signed affidavit—purportedly from me—stating that I voluntarily renounced all familial ties to Rachel and her new royal status due to "unstable mental health."

My hands shook as I traced my own forged signature.

"She committed international document fraud," I said, looking up. "She could be imprisoned for this."

"In our country, falsifying state registry records to deceive the Crown is considered an act of high deception against the throne," Vance said coldly. "King Leopold is a traditionalist. He values honor above all else. When his investigators cross-referenced Rachel’s claims with the Pentagon through diplomatic channels, the U.S. Department of Defense responded within minutes stating that Commander Emily Carter was a decorated, active-duty officer currently receiving commendations for valor."

Vance gave a tight, humorless smile. "The King was not amused to learn he was being lied to on his own wedding day."

Twelve hours later, our aircraft touched down on a private tarmac nestled in the misty mountains of Valenica. A fleet of state limousines whisked us directly past the cheering crowds lining the outer gates of the grand palace. While the international press and elite guests were gathered three miles away at the historic St. Jude’s Cathedral for the royal ceremony, we entered through the heavy iron service gates of the inner keep.

The palace interior was a labyrinth of vaulted stone ceilings, priceless oil paintings, and absolute, hushed power.

Vance led me down a sprawling corridor guarded by armed sentinels and pushed open a pair of towering oak doors labeled The Privy Chamber.

Inside sat King Leopold himself.

He was in his late sixties, with sharp, aristocratic features, silver hair, and eyes that had seen centuries of political games. Standing beside him was Prince Alexander—pale, sweating profusely in his pristine white-and-gold ceremonial regalia, looking as though he had just seen a ghost.

"Sire," Captain Vance announced, snapping a crisp salute. "May I present Commander Emily Carter of the United States Navy."

King Leopold stood up slowly. He looked from my polished black shoes, up past the gleaming ribbons on my chest, to my face.

"Commander," the King said, his voice deep and echoing in the cavernous room. "I am profoundly sorry for the gross indignity that has been inflicted upon your name within my household."

Prince Alexander finally found his voice, stepping forward frantically. "Your Majesty—please—this is all a misunderstanding! Rachel was just... she was nervous about her background, she wanted everything to be perfect—"

"Silence, Alexander," King Leopold commanded, cutting him off with a single wave of his hand. He turned his gaze back to me. "Commander Carter, your sister told my court that you were a criminal outcast. But looking at your record, and looking at you now, I see a woman of exceptional honor. And more importantly..." The King walked over to his mahogany desk and picked up a heavy gold-embossed tablet displaying a live, encrypted satellite feed from St. Jude’s Cathedral. "...your sister is currently standing at the altar, about to take her final vows, while millions of viewers across the globe watch a fairy tale built entirely on a foundation of sand."

The King tapped the screen.

On the live broadcast, Rachel looked radiant. A bespoke silk-and-lace gown, a diamond tiara resting upon her meticulously styled hair, and a smile so practiced it could blind the sun.

"The ceremony is scheduled to conclude in twenty minutes," King Leopold said softly. "The grand banquet follows at the palace courtyard, broadcast live to seventy nations. Tell me, Commander... how would you like to make your grand entrance?"
