Chapter 4 - The Cathedral Doors Open

Back at St. Jude’s Cathedral, the organ music swelled into a triumphant, earth-shaking crescendo.

Rachel and Alexander—now officially husband and wife—walked back down the grand aisle hand in hand. Millions of viewers worldwide watched through high-definition cameras as confetti rained down, choir voices echoed through the ancient stone arches, and guests stood clapping in rapturous applause.

Rachel’s smile was triumphant. She had done it. The girl from small-town Ohio had officially crossed the finish line into global royalty.

They reached the massive oak cathedral doors, stepping out onto the sunlit marble steps to wave at the roaring crowds gathered behind barricades. Cameras flashed like lightning storms. Reporters chattered excitedly into microphones, broadcasting every second of the fairy-tale conclusion.

Rachel turned to her new husband, her eyes sparkling with absolute victory. "We did it, Alexander. Look at them. We're invincible."

Alexander didn't answer. He was staring past her, his face turning a sickening shade of ash-white.

Rachel frowned, following his horrified gaze.

The cheering crowds suddenly fell dead silent. The camera crews froze, their heavy lenses pivoting away from the newly minted royal couple.

From the shadow of the grand courtyard archway, a motorcade of dark diplomatic vehicles pulled to a halt. The doors swung open in synchronized precision.

Six royal guards stepped out, forming a flanking corridor.

And then, stepping out from the center of the formation, came a woman in a crisp, immaculate white U.S. Navy dress uniform. Ribbons gleamed across her chest. Her posture was straight as a steel rod. Her expression was completely devoid of fear or hesitation.

It was me.

Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. The manicured smile vanished instantly from her face, replaced by a mask of absolute, paralyzing terror.

"No," Rachel whispered, grabbing Alexander’s arm so hard her fingernails dug into his sleeve. "No... how is that possible? What is she doing here?!"

Microphones embedded in the floral arrangements near the steps caught her panicked whisper, transmitting it live to millions of television sets across the planet.

I walked slowly, purposefully up the marble steps, my polished boots clicking sharply against the stone. The international press corps stood frozen in stunned silence, their cameras frantically clicking as they zoomed in on my insignia: Commander Emily Carter, United States Navy.

I stopped two steps away from my sister.

Rachel’s chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked gasps. Her designer veil fluttered in the wind.

"Hello, Rachel," I said softly, loud enough for the hidden lapel mics to carry across the globe. "You forgot to invite me to the wedding. So I figured I’d drop by for the reception."
