Chapter 5 - The Global Unraveling

The silence on the cathedral steps was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop against the marble.
Before Rachel could choke out a single word of defense, a convoy of black state vehicles swept into the courtyard. The rear door of the lead limousine opened, and King Leopold himself stepped out, flanked by his chief legal advisor and Captain Vance.
The crowd of dignitaries and journalists gasped audibly. The King rarely attended the post-ceremony greeting line outside; he traditionally met guests only at the private indoor banquet.
King Leopold walked straight up the steps, ignoring the bowing local officials, and stopped directly between Rachel and me.
"Your Majesty!" Rachel managed to gasp, her voice cracking as she hastily curtsied, her knees trembling so badly she nearly lost her balance. "I... I am so honored... why are you out here? The banquet is inside—"
"Quiet, Rachel," King Leopold said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute authority of a sovereign king.
He turned to face the bank of international television cameras broadcasting live to over a hundred countries.
"Citizens of the realm, and viewers across the world," King Leopold announced clearly. "A royal marriage is built upon truth, honor, and family integrity. Today, an egregious fraud was brought to the attention of the Crown. Documents submitted to the Royal Registrar claimed that Commander Emily Carter—a distinguished officer of the United States Navy—was a disgraced outcast, estranged and institutionalized."
Gasps erupted from the gathered elite guests standing in the courtyard. Reporters began tapping frantically on their phones, live-tweeting every word as it happened.
King Leopold turned his piercing gaze back to Rachel, who looked as though she wanted the marble beneath her feet to open up and swallow her whole.
"The Crown has investigated these claims," the King continued, his voice ringing with cold disdain. "They are malicious, fabricated lies. Commander Carter holds an exemplary record of service to her nation. She is not an embarrassment to any family. In fact, it is this court that has been deeply embarrassed by the deceit practiced within our own gates."
Prince Alexander stepped forward, his face pale. "Sire, please! She manipulated this! She—"
"Shut your mouth, Alexander," King Leopold snapped. "You were complicit in signing the registry verifications without verifying their authenticity. For that failure of judgment, your royal stipend is suspended indefinitely, effective immediately."
Rachel stared at her husband in horror, then whipped her head back toward me, her eyes filled with desperate fury. She dropped the polite, polished facade entirely. The mask slipped, revealing the terrified, ruthless climber underneath.
"You did this!" Rachel hissed at me, her voice trembling with venom as millions of viewers watched every twitch of her face. "You couldn't just stay in your little base in Virginia! You had to ruin my life! You couldn't stand to see me happy, could you? You always had to be the hero, the good little soldier!"

I didn't flinch. I looked straight into my sister's eyes—eyes that I used to share secrets with on a back porch in Ohio so many years ago.
"I didn't ruin your life, Rachel," I said calmly. "You built a castle out of lies, and you forgot that houses of cards always collapse when the wind blows."
