Chapter 8 - Epilogue – The True Uniform

Forty-eight hours later, I was back on American soil.

The international media storm was historic. Headlines around the globe blared the dramatic tale: The Royal Groom’s Deception: How a U.S. Navy Commander Cracks a Palace Cover-Up. Talk shows dissected every second of the cathedral confrontation. Rachel’s name became an instant cautionary tale about ambition, vanity, and the cost of betrayal.

I stood on the front porch of my townhouse in Norfolk, Virginia, holding a cup of coffee as the morning sun broke through the clouds. The neighborhood was quiet again. No black diplomatic convoys. No crowds of reporters.

Just peace.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen counter inside. I walked over and picked it up.

It was an encrypted message from Captain Vance, forwarding a final official document from the Royal Registrar of Valenica, alongside a personal note from King Leopold thanking me for upholding the honor of service.

Attached to the message was a short video file.

I tapped play.

It was a recording of Rachel’s public confession, broadcast live across European networks. She stood before a bank of microphones, dressed in a simple black dress, stripped of her tiara, her jewelry, and her royal swagger. She looked directly into the camera and read every word of the state-mandated apology, her voice shaking with humiliation.

I watched it for ten seconds, then locked the screen and set the phone down on the table.

I didn't feel triumphant. I didn't feel vindicated.

I just felt like myself.

I looked down at the simple silver band on my wrist and the neatly pressed uniform hanging in my closet. Rachel had spent her whole life chasing a crown made of gold and glass—something fragile, temporary, and entirely fake.

I had earned something far stronger.

Duty. Purpose. Service.

And no matter how far someone runs, or how many lies they tell, some things can never, ever be erased.
