Chapter 1 - THE DANDELION’S ROOTS AND THE SECRET DRAWERJulian Mercer did not clean up the dirt.

For three hours, the scattered black earth from Nora’s uprooted dandelion sat on the burnished leather of his executive chair. The estate staff walked past his open study door with bated breath, expecting an explosion, a sudden dismissal, or at the very least, a cold command for disinfection. Instead, Julian sat entirely still, his eyes locked on the tiny, fragile yellow blossom resting on his desk where Emma had frantically tried to sweep it.
"Leave it," he had said.
When the sun finally dipped below the Greenwich tree line, plunging the library into long, shifting shadows, Julian reached out. His fingers, calloused from years of gripping power and heavy loss, gently picked up the weed. The damp earth crumbled against his palm, staining his skin. He didn't wipe it off.
Instead, he pulled open the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk.
Inside lay the crooked crayon drawing Nora had slipped beneath his door a week prior—the one with the impossibly tall figure and the orange sun. Beside it, Julian placed the dandelion. He slid the drawer shut with a soft, final click, locking away a piece of warmth he wasn't yet brave enough to name.
Down the hall, in the quiet, drafty confines of the staff cottage, Emma Reed was packing away her daughter’s crayons with shaking hands.
"We're going to pack our bags tonight, Nora," Emma whispered, her voice tight with suppressed panic. She brushed a stray curl from her sleeping daughter's forehead. "Mr. Mercer looked at us today... he looked at you with eyes that could cut glass. We can't push our luck anymore. We’ll leave before dawn."

She didn't know that Julian wasn't angry. She didn't know that across the courtyard, the billionaire was standing at his dark window, staring down at the glowing light of the cottage, fighting a war within himself that he was rapidly losing.
The wall was cracking. And beneath the foundation of his grief, something terrifying and intoxicating was beginning to stir: hope.
