Chapter 8 - THE CRUEL LIE UNRAVELEDJust as the emotional tension in the nursery reached its peak, the quiet peace of the estate was shattered.

Downstairs in the grand foyer, the heavy oak front doors flew open with a violent crash. Raised voices echoed up the curved marble staircase—harsh, frantic, and entirely unwelcome.
"I am the legal representative of the Mercer family estate, and you cannot simply barge in here without—" the head housekeeper’s voice rang out in panic.
"Step aside, Mrs. Gable!" a sharp, feminine voice snapped back. "I don't need an invitation to my own brother-in-law's house, especially when he's being manipulated by opportunistic domestic staff!"
Julian froze. His expression instantly hardened from vulnerable grief into absolute, frozen fury.
Emma’s breath caught. "Who is that?"
"Eleanor," Julian muttered, his jaw clenching. "My late wife's sister."
Before Emma could react, heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs, and a tall, impeccably dressed woman in an expensive designer trench coat marched down the corridor, stopping abruptly at the open door of the nursery.
Eleanor Vance looked around the room with utter disgust, her eyes finally landing on Emma standing awkwardly beside Julian.
"Good God, Julian," Eleanor sneered, crossing her arms over her chest. "I heard rumors that you had lost your mind, keeping common maids and their children roaming the private quarters, but I refused to believe it. And now you've brought her here? To Olivia and Sophie's sanctuary?"
Julian stepped in front of Emma, shielding her from Eleanor’s venomous glare. His voice was a low, lethal whisper.
"Get out of my house, Eleanor."
"Not until I tell you the truth about the woman standing behind you!" Eleanor hissed, her eyes flashing with malicious triumph. She reached into her leather handbag and pulled out a thick manila envelope, slamming it down onto the nursery changing table.
"You think you're playing the white knight, Julian? You think you uncovered some grand corporate conspiracy that makes you feel heroic about Daniel Reed's little accident?" Eleanor laughed bitterly. "Open that envelope. Read the unredacted background check my private investigators pulled on your precious housekeeper this morning."
Emma staggered back, her face turning chalk white. A cold wave of dread washed over her.
Julian didn't flinch. Slowly, deliberately, he reached out and opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs, bank records, and legal affidavits. But as Julian’s eyes scanned the top document, the color drained entirely from his face.
The papers revealed a secret Emma had buried so deep she thought no one on earth would ever find it:
Daniel Reed’s death hadn't been just a corporate negligence accident.

Daniel Reed had been the lead safety inspector who signed off on the faulty brackets six months before the collapse—bribed by the very subcontractors Arthur Pendelton protected.
And the person who had wired the hush-money to the offshore account before skipping town... had been Emma Reed herself.
