Chapter 5 - THE TRAP IS SETBy Monday morning, Mercer Global headquarters in Manhattan was humming with its usual corporate ruthlessness. Elevators whisked high-powered executives to glass-walled offices; interns sprinted across marble lobbies with iced lattes; and billions of dollars in international trade were executed before the opening bell on Wall Street.

On the 42nd floor, Arthur Pendelton adjusted his silk tie in front of the executive washroom mirror, humming a self-satisfied tune.
Arthur was fifty-two, sleek, ambitious, and utterly untouchable—or so he thought. As Senior VP of Regional Operations, he had spent the last five years quietly steering sub-contracts to favored suppliers, pocketing lucrative kickbacks, and sweeping any inconvenient industrial "accidents" under the rug with the quiet efficiency of a mob accountant.
His cell phone buzzed on the polished granite counter.
Private Number.
Arthur frowned, wiping his hands on a paper towel before answering. "Pendelton here."
"Arthur," a voice said through the speaker.
It wasn't just cold. It was the sound of an approaching avalanche.
Arthur’s spine stiffened instantly. He recognized that voice anywhere, despite the rare frequency with which it graced the lower executive floors lately.
"Mr. Mercer!" Arthur stammered, a nervous smile plastering itself across his face even though Julian couldn't see it. "Good morning, sir. I didn't expect you in the Manhattan office today. Your schedule listed you at the Greenwich estate for the rest of the week—"
"Cancel your morning meetings, Arthur," Julian interrupted flatly. "Be in my top-floor conference room in ten minutes."
"Well, I have the European acquisitions briefing at ten-thirty, sir, and—"
"I said ten minutes, Arthur," Julian repeated. The line went dead with a sharp click.
Ten minutes later, Arthur pushed open the heavy oak doors of the private 44th-floor boardroom. He was breathing slightly heavier than usual, smoothing down his tailored suit jacket as he stepped inside.
To his surprise, the room wasn't empty.
Julian Mercer sat at the head of the twenty-seat mahogany table, looking immaculate in a charcoal-gray tailored suit, his fingers steepled before him. But sitting to his immediate left was someone Arthur never expected to see outside a service entrance:
A pale woman in a simple, neat navy dress with tired hazel eyes.
Emma Reed.
Arthur froze midway to a chair, his face losing all color. A sudden, cold drop of sweat formed at the base of his neck.
"Mr... Mr. Mercer," Arthur croaked, casting a bewildered, terrified glance toward Emma. "I... I wasn't aware we had a domestic staffing review scheduled in the executive boardroom today. Is there an issue with the Greenwich estate’s inventory?"
Julian did not invite him to sit. He didn't even blink.

Instead, Julian slowly slid a thick, leather-bound folder across the glass-and-steel table. It stopped precisely at the edge where Arthur stood paralyzed.
"Open it, Arthur," Julian whispered, his voice like the grinding of tectonic plates. "Let's review some old paperwork together."
