Chapter 1 - The Silver Noose

The sound of the porcelain shattering against the hardwood floor seemed to echo in slow motion. Hot tea seeped into the rug, and shards of the ceramic plate rolled away, stopping just short of the bed. My breath caught in my lungs, tight and suffocating.
There, neatly laid out on the mattress like a morbid exhibition, were items I knew better than my own reflection.
A collection of Polaroid photos of my late daughter, Maya. A stack of handwritten letters tied with a frayed black ribbon. And right in the center, gleaming under the dim morning light, was the small silver locket shaped like a crescent moon—the exact necklace Maya had been wearing the night her car plunged over the bridge three years ago. The necklace the police told me had been lost to the river currents.
"What is this?" my voice cracked, barely a whisper. "Who are you?"
The young woman—who had called herself Elena—stood up from the corner of the room. The fragile, helpless girl from the sidewalk was gone. In her place stood someone cold, guarded, and hyper-vigilant. She instinctively stepped between me and the sleeping baby in the crib.
"I didn't want you to find out this way," she said, her voice trembling but devoid of the submissive fear she had displayed the night before.
"Where did you get that necklace?!" I roared, the grief and shock morphing into a sudden, violent surge of adrenaline. I lunged forward, grabbing the silver chain from the bed. "This belonged to my daughter! She died three years ago! Who gave this to you?!"
Elena didn't flinch. She looked straight into my eyes, and tears finally spilled over her lower lids. "Nobody gave it to me, Arthur. I took it from her. Because Maya wasn't alone in that car when it went off the road. And her death... it wasn't an accident."
My heart stopped. The room spun. Before I could process her words, a heavy shadow fell across the open doorway of the guest house. I turned around to see a tall, broad-shouldered man standing in the garden, his face obscured by a low-brimmed cap.

Elena gasped, her face turning completely bloodless. "Oh god," she whimpered, backing toward the crib. "He found us. Arthur, you need to lock the door right now!"
