Chapter 3 - The Secret Ward

The silence that followed was suffocating. Marcus moved instantly, drawing his weapon and aiming it directly at Elena. "That's enough! Arthur, get out of the way! She is poisoning your mind with delusions!"
"Lower the gun, Marcus," I said, a cold, unnatural calmness washing over me. I stepped directly into the line of fire, shielding Elena and the baby. "You closed her case in less than forty-eight hours. You told me the body was too badly damaged by the river to allow an open casket. You rushed the cremation. I trusted you. We were friends."
"Arthur, you don't know the forces you are dealing with," Marcus pleaded, his hand shaking. "If you don't let me take her and the child right now, neither of you will see tomorrow. There are people above the law who want this swept away."
"Who?" I demanded.
Instead of answering, Marcus's eyes suddenly widened. He looked past me, out the window of the guest house. Two sleek, black SUVs had just pulled up silently into my driveway, blocking my car. Men in dark suits were stepping out.
"They tracked my cruiser," Marcus whispered, his face draining of color. The anger in his eyes vanished, replaced by sheer panic. "They're here. They aren't going to arrest her, Arthur. They're going to eliminate all of us."
Marcus lowered his gun, his allegiance shifting in a split second out of pure survival instinct. "There’s an old storm cellar beneath your garden shed, isn't there? Move! Now!"
We bolted out the back door of the guest house just as the front windows shattered from suppressed gunfire. We scrambled into the dense foliage of the garden, Elena clutching the baby against her chest, muffling his cries with her jacket.
We threw ourselves into the dark, dusty storm cellar, slamming the heavy wooden doors shut just as footsteps crunched heavily on the gravel above us.
In the pitch black, breathing heavily, Elena finally spilled the truth. "Maya discovered a human trafficking and illicit surrogacy ring operating out of the private clinic downtown—the one owned by Senator Sterling. When she tried to go to the press, they staged the car crash. But they realized she was already pregnant. They couldn't risk killing the child of a prominent bloodline, so they hid her in a private medical wing for over two years, keeping her comatose, using her body as an incubator."
I gripped my chest, feeling my heart physically break. "And you?"
May you like
"I was a nurse at that facility," Elena cried quietly. "Maya woke up for forty-eight hours after giving birth. She knew she wouldn't survive the next 'procedure.' She begged me to take her baby. She gave me her necklace and told me to find you. She died holding my hand, Arthur. I ran with your grandson."
