Chapter 4 - The Betrayal in the Dark

The heavy footsteps above us paused directly over the storm cellar doors. We held our breath. The baby let out a tiny whimpering sound, and Elena immediately pressed her palm gently over his mouth, her eyes wide with terror.

Above us, a muffled voice spoke through a radio. "Target not in the guest house. Search the perimeter."

The footsteps faded away toward the main house. We breathed a collective, shaky sigh of relief, but the reprieve was short-lived.

"We can't stay here," Marcus hissed, checking his service weapon. "Once they realize the house is clear, they’ll check every inch of the grounds. Arthur, we need your car keys."

"The keys are in the main house, on the kitchen counter," I whispered, my mind racing. "But the SUVs are blocking the driveway. We'll never make it out by car."

"I have a motorcycle in the garage," Marcus countered. "It's small, but it can get Elena and the baby out of here. You and I will have to hold them off."

I looked at Marcus, wanting desperately to trust the man who had been my friend, but a nagging thought clawed at my mind. If Marcus was part of the cover-up three years ago, why was he helping us now?

"Why the sudden change of heart, Marcus?" I asked, my voice laced with suspicion. "You helped them hide my daughter's murder for three years."

Marcus looked down, shame washing over his rugged features. "They threatened my family, Arthur. They told me if I didn't sign off on the accident report, my own daughter would suffer the same fate. But when I found out what they actually did to Maya... what they turned her into... I couldn't live with it anymore. I'm trying to fix it."

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the main house above us. The front door had been kicked in.

"They're inside," Elena whispered, her body trembling.

"I'll go get the keys and distract them," Marcus said, standing up on the cellar ladder. "When you hear the gunfire, you two run for the garage."

Before I could stop him, Marcus pushed the cellar door open and slipped into the shadows of the morning fog. For three agonizing minutes, there was nothing but silence. Then, a volley of loud, unmistakable gunshots shattered the quiet neighborhood.

"Now!" I shouted to Elena.

We scrambled out of the cellar and sprinted toward the detached garage. But as I opened the side door, I froze. Standing inside the garage, waiting for us with a cold, triumphant smile, was Senator Sterling himself, flanked by two armed security guards.

And next to him, holding my car keys with a smirk on his face, was Detective Marcus Vance.
