Chapter 5 - The Price of Silence

"You really are a fool, Arthur," Senator Sterling chuckled, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit. "Did you honestly think a decorated police detective would throw away his career, his pension, and his life for a piece of trash nurse and a bastard child?"

I looked at Marcus, my blood boiling. "You sold out my daughter. And now you're selling out her child."

Marcus wouldn't look me in the eye. He stared at the floor, his voice hollow. "They offered to clear my debts, Arthur. And they guaranteed my family's safety. In this world, you protect your own."

"And who protects the innocent?" Elena spat, tightening her grip on the baby.

"Innocence is a luxury for the poor," Sterling said coldly. He nodded to his guards. "Take the child. Eliminate the nurse and the old man. Make it look like a murder-suicide. The grief finally drove poor Arthur over the edge."

The guards stepped forward, raising their silenced pistols. Elena squeezed her eyes shut, pulling the baby close, preparing for the end. I stepped in front of her, ready to take the bullets, refusing to let my daughter's child die without a fight.

CRASH!

The glass roof of the garage suddenly shattered inward.

A flashbang grenade dropped from the skylight, exploding in a blinding flash of white light and a deafening roar. The guards screamed, dropping their weapons as they clutched their blinded eyes.

Through the smoke, three figures tactical gear dropped down from ropes attached to the roof. They weren't Sterling's men. They were wearing federal badges.

"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice commanded.

In the chaos, Marcus tried to pull his gun, but a federal agent instantly tackled him to the ground, pinning him into the concrete. Sterling tried to run toward the garage doors, but the exit was already blocked by a dozen heavily armed tactical officers.

A sharp-eyed female agent walked over to us, lowering her weapon. "Arthur? Elena? I’m Special Agent Rhodes. We’ve been tracking Senator Sterling’s black-market operations for six months. Elena's escape from the facility was the catalyst we needed to bring the whole empire down. We used Marcus's tracking device to find you, knowing he would lead us straight to the Senator."

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for three long years. It was over. The nightmare was finally over.
