Chapter 3 - THE FEDERAL RAIDThe heavy oak doors didn't just open—they were violently pushed inward as a squad of heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear swarmed into the grand foyer. Their boots thundered against the pristine Italian marble, scattering the gathering crowd of terrified servants.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" the lead agent, a towering woman with piercing eyes named Special Agent Vance, commanded, holding up her badge.

Arthur Sterling tried to take a step backward toward the grand staircase, his face entirely drained of blood. "There must be some mistake! I am Arthur Sterling! I am a pillar of this community, a major donor to—"

"Save it, Sterling," Agent Vance interrupted, stepping directly into his path. She motioned to two agents behind her. "Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for the systematic embezzlement of over forty million dollars from Sterling Global Enterprises, international money laundering, and obstruction of justice."

"This is an outrage! My lawyer will—" Arthur stammered, his aristocratic composure completely shattering as steel handcuffs were slammed onto his wrists with a metallic snap.

Evelyn was hyperventilating, clutching her chest as she leaned against a marble pillar. "Agent Vance! Listen to me! My husband is a respected man! Look at her!" She pointed a shaky finger down at Clara, who was still kneeling on the floor. "The real criminal is right there! She stole my diamond necklace! There's proof right there in her cart!"

Agent Vance glanced at the giant projector screen, which was still paused on the incriminating footage of Arthur planting the necklace in Clara’s cleaning cart. A subtle, grim smile crossed the agent's face.

"Mrs. Sterling, your husband didn't just frame an innocent girl for theft today," Agent Vance said coldly. "He was trying to create a diversion. Our forensic accountants have been tracking the outflow of stolen corporate funds for months. Do you know where a large portion of those embezzled millions went?"

Evelyn blinked, tears streaming down her makeup-stained face. "W-What are you talking about? His investments..."

"No, Mrs. Sterling," Agent Vance replied, turning to Mr. Jones. "Mr. Jones, please unlock the master study's digital archives. Pull up the secondary vault logs."

Mr. Jones, pale as a ghost, frantically tapped his tablet. A secondary window flashed onto the giant screen, displaying a series of financial transfer records, offshore bank accounts, and high-resolution passport scans.

The entire room gasped.

The offshore accounts weren't registered in Arthur Sterling’s name. They were registered under Evelyn Sterling.

"You both thought you were being clever," Agent Vance said, looking between the stunned husband and wife. "Arthur embezzled the funds from the corporation to hide impending bankruptcy, and Evelyn, you were actively funneling millions into secret accounts in the Cayman Islands to prepare for a clean divorce without leaving him a single dime. When Clara came to clean today, Arthur realized the federal raid was imminent and needed a scapegoat to distract us long enough to shred the physical ledger books in his private safe."

Evelyn turned her wide, horrified eyes toward her handcuffed husband. "You... you were using me as your backup plan? You planned to blame the bankruptcy on me while you fled the country?"

"Shut up, Evelyn! You stupid cow, you ruined everything!" Arthur screamed, losing all remaining shreds of his dignity as he thrashed against the federal agents holding him.

"Take them both away," Agent Vance ordered crisply.

As Arthur and Evelyn Sterling were dragged out through the grand double doors in handcuffs, the flashing red and blue lights of a dozen police cruisers painted the marble walls of the foyer in an eerie, pulsing glow.

Clara slowly stood up from the floor, brushing her knees. The nightmare of the accusation was over, but as she looked around at the ruined empire of the Sterling family, she realized that the true mystery of the mansion had not yet been solved. Because as Agent Vance walked past Clara, she slipped a small, folded piece of paper into the pocket of Clara's apron and whispered: "Don't leave the estate yet, Clara. We found something else in that safe that belongs to you."
