Chapter 5 - THE CORPORATE SNAKEThe rain began to lash against the towering glass windows of the executive boardroom on the 40th floor of Sterling Tower downtown. The atmosphere inside was tense, suffocating, and charged with corporate panic.

Following the dramatic arrest of Arthur Sterling, emergency board meetings had been called. Executives in sharp charcoal suits sat around the massive mahogany table, murmuring anxiously. At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance—no relation to the FBI agent, but a ruthlessly ambitious senior partner and Arthur’s longtime right-hand man.

Marcus slammed his fist onto the table, silencing the room.

"Enough panicking!" Marcus barked, his voice dripping with venom. "Arthur made mistakes, yes! He let his ego cloud his judgment. But the corporation is still standing. If we act quickly, we can restructure the assets, sweep the federal investigation under the rug, and I can assume the CEO position by the end of the week."

A timid voice spoke up from the end of the table. It was Sarah, the head of legal compliance. "Marcus, the federal auditors are freezing all accounts. And... there’s a rumor that Uncle Jonathan is still alive and returning to contest the ownership."

Marcus let out a harsh, barking laugh. "Jonathan? That old fool has been out of the picture for two decades! He has no legal standing, no proof, and no allies left in this company. As long as I control the master server keys and the digital signatures, this company belongs to us!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom slowly creaked open.

Marcus frowned, irritation flashing across his sharp features. "I locked this room! Who gave permission to enter? Security, throw them—"

The words died in his throat.

The doors swung fully open. Stepping into the boardroom wasn't a corporate lawyer or a federal agent.

It was Clara.

She wasn't wearing her worn-out cleaning apron anymore. Instead, she wore a sharp, impeccably tailored midnight-blue pantsuit that fit her slender frame perfectly. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional bun, and her posture radiated an aura of quiet, unshakable authority.

Behind her walked Jonathan Sterling, leaning on a polished cane, flanked by two federal agents in full uniform.

Marcus stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the carpet. His face turned an ugly shade of purple. "What is the meaning of this?! Who let this cleaning girl into the executive suite?! Guards! Remove her immediately!"

None of the security guards outside moved.

Clara walked forward slowly, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished hardwood floor. She didn't look down; she locked her piercing, confident eyes directly onto Marcus.

"You can stop shouting, Marcus," Clara said, her voice calm, clear, and carrying an unexpected weight that commanded absolute silence in the room. "The cleaning girl left this building this morning. The new majority owner and Chairperson of Sterling Global Enterprises has arrived."

Marcus burst into shrill, nervous laughter. He looked around the boardroom at the other executives, trying to rally support. "Are you all hearing this? A maid! A little nobody from the slums thinks she can walk in here and claim a multi-billion-dollar empire? Have you lost your mind?"

"She hasn't lost her mind, Marcus," a cool, authoritative voice spoke from the doorway.

Special Agent Vance stepped into the room, holding a thick digital tablet. She walked straight up to the master presentation screen at the front of the boardroom and plugged in a secure drive.

"Mr. Marcus Vance," Agent Vance announced, her voice echoing through the silent room. "You didn't just help Arthur Sterling embezzle forty million dollars. Our forensic audit discovered that over the past three years, you personally funneled twelve million dollars into offshore dummy corporations managed under your sister’s name."

Marcus’s face drained of all color. The arrogant sneer vanished, replaced by a look of sheer panic. "That’s... that’s a complete fabrication! You have no proof!"

"We have your digital signature, Marcus," Clara said quietly, stopping right in front of him and placing a heavy brass key onto the center of the mahogany table. "And we have the original corporate charter signed by your mentor, Arthur Sterling, proving that every contract you and Arthur signed over the past decade is null and void due to fraud."

Marcus lunged across the table like a cornered animal, his hands clawing toward the documents on the table. "You little bitch! I'll ruin you! I'll—"

Before he could take another step, the two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by both shoulders and slamming him down onto the table. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed sharply through the boardroom.

As Marcus was dragged away, kicking and screaming obscenities, Clara turned to look at the stunned executives sitting around the table.

"Meeting adjourned," Clara said softly, adjusting her jacket cuffs. "Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, we begin restructuring."
