Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING AT BLACKWOOD PRISONThree weeks later, the rain was relentless, hammering against the cold, iron-barred windows of Blackwood Maximum Security Prison. The facility smelled of disinfectant, despair, and damp concrete.

In the sterile visiting room, separated by a thick pane of scratched Plexiglas, sat Arthur Sterling.

The once-proud billionaire was unrecognizable. His designer suits had been replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. His hair was uncombed, his skin sallow and hollow-cheeked, and his eyes darted nervously around the room as if shadows were closing in on him.

The heavy steel door at the end of the room unlocked with a loud clank.

Arthur looked up, expecting his lawyers—who had long since abandoned him. Instead, his breath caught in his throat.

Walking into the visiting room was Clara.

She wore a classic black trench coat over her designer suit, her expression completely serene. She walked up to the Plexiglas partition, sat down in the steel chair on the other side, and picked up the heavy black telephone receiver.

Arthur’s hands trembled as he picked up his own receiver, pressing it against his ear.

"C-Clara?" Arthur’s voice cracked, pathetic and desperate. "Clara, please... you have to help me. My lawyers are useless. Evelyn has filed for divorce and cleaned out whatever scraps were left in my personal accounts. I’m trapped in here with murderers and psychopaths! Please... as a Christian, as a human being... show some mercy!"

Clara didn't blink. She stared at him through the thick glass, her gaze colder than the winter wind outside.

"Mercy, Arthur?" Clara’s voice came through the static-filled speaker, calm and steady. "Is that what you showed my father twenty-five years ago when you sabotaged his car and left my mother to die of a broken heart? Did you show mercy when you framed me for theft and tried to send me to prison to cover up your crimes?"

Arthur shrank back in his chair, his eyes bulging in terror. "Y-You know...?"

"I know everything, Arthur," Clara said quietly. "Every penny you stole, every life you ruined, every bribe you paid. And do you want to know the most poetic part of all of this?"

Arthur swallowed hard, tears spilling down his hollow cheeks. "W-What?"

"The cell block you’re currently assigned to—Block C... do you know who financed the new security wing for that block last week?" Clara tilted her head, a faint, chilling smile touching her lips. "I did. As the new majority owner of Sterling Global Enterprises, I made a special corporate donation to ensure that the warden keeps you in solitary confinement for twenty-three hours a day, with no special privileges, no phone calls, and no visitors except for me... once a month."

Arthur let out a choked, desperate sob, slamming his fists against the Plexiglas partition. "You monster! You're destroying me!"

May you like

"No, Arthur," Clara said softly, standing up from her chair and buttoning her trench coat. "I’m just finishing what you started."

She hung up the receiver with a sharp click, turned around, and walked out of the visiting room without looking back once.
