Chapter 5 - Resurrection and Retribution

The room spun into a surreal vortex of nightmare and reality. Arthur stood paralyzed, his eyes darting between the ghost from his past standing in the doorway and the young woman holding the gun.

Sarah Sterling stepped across the threshold, her footsteps steady and deliberate. She didn't look like a woman who had drowned in a Vermont lake five years ago. She looked like a woman reborn in fire, carrying the weight of a decade's worth of vengeance.

"S-Sarah?" Arthur choked out, his voice barely a rasp. He reached out a trembling hand, as if afraid that if he touched her, she would dissolve into mist. "You're... you're alive?"

Sarah stopped a few feet away from him. Her gaze wasn't filled with the loving warmth he remembered; it was frozen, sharp as surgical steel.

"Surprised, darling?" Sarah asked, a bitter, humorless smile touching her lips. "Did you really think a little premeditated murder and a staged car crash would get rid of me that easily? Elena was thorough, I'll give her that. She left me for dead in a crushed metal coffin at the bottom of a ravine with a fractured skull and a shattered memory."

Elena slumped against the bookshelf, her fingernails clawing uselessly at the wood. Her face was a mask of sheer, unadulterated terror. "No... no... I saw you burn! I paid the coroner off! You're a ghost!"

"I'm not a ghost, Elena. I'm the consequence," Sarah replied coldly. She turned her attention to Clara, who stepped forward, lowering the revolver and placing it gently on Arthur’s desk.

"Meet my younger sister, Chloe," Sarah said smoothly, gesturing to the young maid. "The little girl you threw into the foster care system fifteen years ago after our parents died, Elena. Did you really think we wouldn't find each other? Did you think blood forgets?"

Arthur stared at Clara—at Chloe—and then back at Sarah. The puzzle pieces violently slammed together in his mind. The agency recommendation, the suspiciously clean background check, the uncanny resemblance, the lullaby. It had all been an elaborately orchestrated trap.

"Sarah," Arthur managed to say, his chest heaving with suffocating guilt. "I swear to God, I didn't know. Elena told me—"

"I know what Elena told you, Arthur," Sarah interrupted, her voice cutting through his plea like a knife. "You were too busy building your empire, too blind to notice that the woman you invited into our home was a sociopath who wanted your money and my life."

Elena, realizing she had nothing left to lose, suddenly lunged forward toward the desk, her hand diving blindly toward the gun Chloe had just laid down. "If I'm going down, I'm taking all of you to hell with me!"

BANG!

The deafening crack of a gunshot shattered the glass of the window.

Dust exploded from the mahogany desk just inches from Elena’s grasping fingers. Elena froze, her hand hovering over empty space, her breath caught in her throat.

Chloe stood calmly, holding a second, smaller pistol she had concealed in her cardigan pocket, wisps of smoke curling from the barrel.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Mrs. Sterling," Chloe said sweetly, her voice as calm as if she were discussing the weather. "My aim is much better than yours."
