Chapter 7 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The heavy grandfather clock in the corner of the study chimed 2:00 AM, its deep, resonant gongs echoing like funeral bells.

Downstairs, the estate was secure. The security team Sarah and Chloe had mobilized had locked down every exit, intercepting any potential alerts before Elena’s phone could buzz. The house was an impenetrable fortress of truth.

Arthur stood by the shattered window, looking out into the sprawling, manicured gardens where moonlight danced across the fountains. His hands were stuffed deep into his pockets, trembling slightly. The betrayal was staggering—not just from Elena, but from the haunting realization of how blind he had been.

"What happens now?" Arthur asked quietly, without turning around. "Do we call the authorities? Do I hand my wife over to a prison cell and my CFO to federal marshals?"

"The authorities are already on their way, Arthur," Sarah said, walking over to stand beside him at the window. "Not through local channels, of course. Federal indictments take time to process, but thanks to the digital package Chloe uploaded to the SEC and the FBI's financial crimes division an hour ago, arrest warrants have already been issued."

Arthur turned to look at her. The harsh moonlight caught the profile of her face—the same face he had mourned for half a decade.

"And us?" Arthur asked, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he hadn't shown anyone in years. "Sarah... you came back for vengeance. But what about the boys? What about... us?"

Sarah looked down at her hands, for a brief second losing the cold, hardened armor she had worn all night. A deep, sorrowful sigh escaped her lips.

"The boys don't remember the accident, Arthur. They only remember a mother who vanished into thin air," Sarah said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "When Chloe took that job as a maid last week, she didn't do it just to test the waters. She did it to see if they were safe. To see if you had protected them, or if you had let another monster into our home."

Arthur swallowed hard, the guilt weighing heavier than lead. "I failed them. I failed you."

"Yes, you did," Sarah agreed honestly, meeting his gaze head-on. "You were too arrogant, too consumed by your corporate wars to see what was rotting right under your roof. But... you didn't pull the trigger. And when you heard that lullaby tonight... something in you woke up."

Before Arthur could reply, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. The double doors swung open, revealing two federal agents in dark suits flanked by private security guards, escorting a pale, handcuffed David Vance.

Elena was hauled up from the floor by a female officer, her face twisted in a mask of pure hatred as she was dragged past Sarah and Arthur.

"You won't get away with this!" Elena screamed, spitting toward Sarah. "You're both going to burn!"

As the doors closed behind them, sealing Elena’s fate, a profound, heavy silence settled over the study.

Sarah turned toward the door, walking slowly toward the hallway. "It's late, Arthur. The boys are asleep. I suggest you go upstairs and tell them a story."

Arthur stepped forward, blocking her path. "Where are you going, Sarah? You're not walking out of this house again."

Sarah looked up at him, a faint, melancholic smile playing on her lips. "I'm not leaving, Arthur. My room is down the hall. But don't mistake this for a reunion. We have a very long, very difficult road ahead of us if we ever want to earn our children's trust back."

She stepped past him, her familiar scent of lavender and wild mint filling the air once more.
