Chapter 3 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

My hands were shaking as I locked myself inside my pickup truck two blocks away from the school. I plugged the stolen server drive into my ruggedized diagnostic laptop using a high-speed SATA adapter I kept for vehicle ECU tuning.
My screen flickered. The raw directory structure opened up. Hundreds of video files, stamped with dates and times, flooded the window.
I scrolled rapidly to yesterday’s date—5:15 PM, just as the school carnival was starting.
I opened the video feed labeled CAM-09: BASEMENT CORRIDOR.
My stomach dropped into a abyss.
There, in crystal-clear 1080p high definition, was Jason Harrison. He was standing outside the boiler room door, looking nervously up and down the empty hallway. A moment later, he reached out, caught seven-year-old Lily by her backpack, and dragged her forcibly into the dark storage room while she struggled against his grip. Twenty minutes later, the door opened, and Lily stumbled out, wiping tears from her eyes, clutching her side in obvious pain, while Harrison casually adjusted his tie and walked off toward the gym.
"Got you, you bastard," I whispered, tears of absolute fury and relief stinging my eyes.
Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated violently on the dashboard. It was Detective Karen Miller from the SVU.
"David, where are you?" her voice was tight, filled with urgent warning.
"I have the proof, Karen. I have the video—"
"David, stop talking and listen to me!" Miller interrupted, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper. "Do NOT go home. And do NOT go to the school. Superintendent Pendelton just filed an emergency injunction and criminal complaint against you. They told the Chief of Police that you threatened school staff at the carnival yesterday, and that you just broke into the building and stole district property."
"They're scrubbing the evidence, Karen! I caught them in the act!"
"It doesn't matter!" Miller snapped with desperate frustration. "The police chief is close friends with Harrison’s father! They’ve dispatched three squad cars to your garage right now with an arrest warrant for felony burglary and child endangerment! If they arrest you with that hard drive, the evidence will 'mysteriously' disappear while you sit in a holding cell without bail!"
I felt a cold wave of terror hit my chest. The trap was springing around me. The system was shutting down every avenue of escape.
"Where is Lily?" I demanded, my voice raw.
"She’s safe. Your sister took her to an undisclosed shelter outside county lines. But David, you are officially a hunted man in this county. They are broadcasting an emergency broadcast alert for your truck."
I looked up in my rearview mirror. A quarter-mile down the road, the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers swung onto the main boulevard, searching side streets.

"David?" Miller whispered. "What are you going to do?"
I gripped the steering wheel, my heart pounding like a war drum. "They want a fight? I'm going to give them a war."
