Chapter 8 - THE LIGHT AFTER DARKNESS

Three months later.

The crisp, bitter cold of late January hung over the county courthouse. The trial hadn't even lasted a week. Faced with the mountain of unalterable digital video evidence, forensic hospital records, and the sudden testimony of four other former students who finally found the courage to speak up, Harrison’s high-priced lawyers collapsed.

Jason Harrison pleaded guilty to multiple felony counts of aggravated abuse and child endangerment. The judge handed down a maximum sentence: thirty-five years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Superintendent Pendelton was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to eight years in federal prison. The entire school board was dismantled and replaced.

I sat on the front porch of my house, wrapping my fingers around a steaming mug of hot coffee. The afternoon sun was warm against the melting snow on the roof.

The front door opened, and Lily ran out onto the porch, wrapped in her favorite bright yellow winter coat. Her face was bright, her eyes sparkling with the light, joyful energy that had been stolen from her for so long. The dark marks on her body were completely gone, healed by time and love.

"Dad! Look!" she cheered, holding up a brightly colored watercolor painting of a giant, ridiculous panda bear holding a slice of cake. "I painted it for my new school art class!"

I smiled, setting my coffee down, and pulled her into a tight, warm hug. I held her close, listening to the soft, steady rhythm of her breathing against my chest—the sweetest sound in the entire world.

"It's the most beautiful panda I've ever seen, Lil," I whispered into her hair.

She looked up at me, her small hand resting gently over my heart. "Dad?"

"Yeah, sweetie?"

"Are we safe now?"
