Chapter 5 - THE EMBARRASSMENT OF POWER

By 6:30 PM, the parking lot of Maplewood High School was packed with hundreds of cars. Local news vans with massive satellite dishes lined the sidewalk, cameras flashing under the bright streetlights. The story had gone regional.

I had traded my grease-stained mechanic work coat for a clean charcoal suit I hadn't worn since Sarah's funeral. I wore a low baseball cap and kept my head down as I walked through the crowd of parents, reporters, and uniform police officers guarding the lobby entrance.

The police were looking for a frantic man driving a red pickup truck. They weren't looking for a quiet man walking calmly through the front doors carrying a small, leather brief-folder.

I slipped into the massive, two-thousand-seat auditorium and took a seat near the back under the shadow of the balcony. The room was buzzing with anxious energy. Hundreds of parents were shouting, demanding answers, split between those who defended Harrison’s golden reputation and those who felt something rotten was happening beneath the surface.

At 7:00 PM sharply, Superintendent Arthur Pendelton took the stage, flanked by five members of the school board. To his right sat Jason Harrison, looking polished, calm, and completely in control. Two armed police officers stood at the wings of the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please, take your seats," Pendelton announced into the microphone, his voice echoing over the high-tech AV audio system. "We understand there are intense emotions in this room tonight. But I want to assure every parent here: Maplewood Elementary is safe. The grotesque rumors circulating on social media regarding our esteemed principal, Mr. Harrison, are completely unfounded, unsubstantiated, and fabricated by a single, deeply disturbed individual who is currently fleeing law enforcement."

A chorus of murmured gasps swept through the audience.

Harrison leaned into his microphone, offering a somber smile. "I only ask that you pray for Mr. Vance and his poor daughter during this difficult time. The truth will prevail."

"Yes," I spoke up, my voice cutting through the heavy air of the auditorium like a sharp knife. "The truth will prevail."
