Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBLED SHIELD

Superintendent Pendelton lunged for the main AV power console on the stage, trying to rip the cables out of the wall.
"Don't you dare!" a powerful voice shouted from the front row.
Detective Karen Miller stepped out of the crowd, wearing her official SVU shield around her neck, accompanied by four state troopers in broad-brimmed hats.
"Detective Miller!" Pendelton stammered, trembling. "This man is a criminal! He stole district property!"
"Shut up, Arthur," Detective Miller said with lethal authority. She turned her eyes toward the projection screen. "Mr. Vance... hit play."
I tapped my phone screen.
The massive, thirty-foot cinema screen behind the school board flickered to life.
The high-definition footage began playing. The auditorium turned deathly silent—so quiet you could hear a pin drop across the carpet.
There, illuminated in crisp detail for two thousand parents and every major news network to see, was Jason Harrison grabbing my small daughter, ignoring her frantic crying, and shoving her into the dark basement storage closet. The timestamp was unalterable, burned hard into the digital metadata.
Gasps of pure horror echoed through the crowd. Women cried out, covering their eyes. Men stood up from their seats, shouting in outrage.
"You sick monster!" a father in the third row roared, lunging toward the stage, only to be held back by state troopers.
Harrison backed away from the podium, his face pale as paper, his hands shaking violently as he looked around the room. The golden boy, the untouchable politician's son, the protected leader... his entire kingdom had crumbled to dust in less than sixty seconds.
"It... it isn't what it looks like..." Harrison stammered, backed against the back wall of the stage as the crowd surged forward in sheer fury. "I was... I was disciplining her!"
"You touched my child," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and filled with the terrifying weight of a father's absolute judgment. "And your shield is gone."
Detective Miller stepped onto the stage, pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt, and slammed Harrison face-first against the wooden podium.
CLACK. CLACK.
"Jason Harrison, you are under arrest for felony aggravated child abuse, witness tampering, and evidence destruction," Miller declared, her voice booming over the sound system. "You have the right to remain silent..."

As the state troopers dragged a sobbing, trembling Harrison off the stage in front of a barrage of flashing news cameras, Detective Miller turned to Superintendent Pendelton.
"And Arthur?" Miller added coldly, pulling out a second set of handcuffs. "You're coming with us too. Obstruction of justice and conspiracy to cover up a felony."
