Chapter 3 - The Cover-Up UnravelsBlake stood up slowly, his knees popping in the quiet garage. The billion-dollar victory he had celebrated hours ago with champagne and flashbulbs suddenly felt like a monument built on quicksand.

He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over Marcus Vance’s contact. Marcus was his chief of operations—the ruthless troubleshooter who handled municipal clearances, demolition permits, and the "messy details" Blake never wanted to see.

Ring. Ring.

"Blake? Boss?" Marcus’s voice came through the speaker, thick with the drowsy irritation of a man woken from a post-celebration sleep. "Tell me you're not calling about the zoning board again. It's midnight."

"Marcus," Blake said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Tell me about the Ironwood Blocks clearance schedule."

A pause on the other end. The sound of rustling bedsheets. "Smooth as silk. Standard procedure. Why are you asking about that now?"

"Because I'm standing in my garage, and a little girl named Maya from 414 Elm Street is sitting behind a concrete pillar telling me her parents were trapped inside when the bulldozers rolled in early."

Silence stretched across the line—a heavy, guilty silence that answered Blake’s question before Marcus could even open his mouth.

"Boss... listen to me," Marcus stammered, his polished confidence evaporating instantly. "That’s... that was a rogue contractor error. The city inspectors signed off on the structural clearance. There were rumors of squatters, sure, but the site was legally vacant—"

"Don't lie to me, Marcus," Blake hissed, stepping away from the pillar so Maya wouldn't hear the rage building in his chest. "You pushed the demolition date forward by a week to beat the Q3 financial reporting deadline, didn't you? You didn't verify the final sweep!"

"We had millions on the line, Blake! If we delayed, the investors would have pulled out!" Marcus shouted back. "Keep your voice down. If this leaks—if the press finds out Harrington Developments demolished an occupied building to rush a quarterly report—we are finished. The stock will tank, the board will oust you, and we could face criminal negligence charges."

Blake slowly lowered the phone from his ear. He looked back at Maya. She was watching him with wide, trusting eyes, wrapped in his thousand-dollar designer suit jacket, shivering in the dark.

He clicked End Call.
