Chapter 2 - The Price of Silence

Daniel didn't hesitate. Adrenaline, pure and hot, flooded his veins. He stood up, placing his tall, athletic frame directly between the thug and the terrified nine-year-old girl.

"Step back," Daniel commanded, his voice vibrating with the cold, lethal authority that had built his financial empire. "You don't know who you're dealing with."

Gary laughed, a dry, rasping sound. "Oh, I know exactly who you are, Carter. The grieving billionaire. The man who trusts his family too much. You think I'm here by accident? I saw the kid’s photo in the girl's bag this morning. I knew she'd lead you right to the truth if she got sloppy."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. "You know about Ethan."

"I know he’s worth a hell of a lot more to me alive than dead," Gary grinned, revealing stained teeth. "Your sister Sarah has been paying my rent for three years to keep that brat out of sight. But lately, she's been getting cheap. Skipping payments. Threatening to 'dispose' of the problem permanently. I figure it's time for a upgrades. You want the boy back? It'll cost you five million dollars. In cash. By midnight."

"Done," Daniel said instantly, not blinking. "Take me to him now, and you'll have the money."

"Dad? Is that you?"

The voice didn't come from Gary. It came from a thick thicket of rhododendron bushes near the edge of the cemetery property. A fragile, trembling figure stumbled out into the open. It was Ethan. He had followed Annie, terrified for her safety. He looked frail, his clothes oversized, but his eyes were wide, filled with an agonizing recognition.

"Ethan!" Daniel cried out.

"Get back here, you little rat!" Gary lunged past Daniel, swinging the tire iron toward the boy to use him as a hostage.

Daniel reacted on instinct. He tackled Gary around the waist, slamming the larger man into the damp earth. The tire iron flew from Gary's grip, clattering against Margaret’s headstone. They wrestled in the mud, Gary punching wildly, catching Daniel across the jaw. But Daniel, fueled by three years of stolen fatherhood, fought with demonic strength. He pinned Gary’s arms, slamming his fist down until the thug went limp.

Gasping for air, Daniel stood up and turned to his son. Ethan stood frozen, tears streaming down his dirt-streaked face.

Daniel took three slow steps and gathered the boy into his arms. Ethan sobbed violently, burying his face into his father's chest. "She told me you didn't want me," Ethan wept. "Aunt Sarah said you blamed me for Mom's death. She said you signed the papers to get rid of me!"

"No, Ethan, never," Daniel choked out, holding his son as if he might dissolve into mist. "She lied to us. She lied to everyone."

But as Daniel looked up, his relief vanished. Gary was gone. The man had crawled away into the underbrush during their embrace. And suddenly, Daniel’s phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a text from an unknown number.

“You have the boy. But I have the override codes to your company’s entire offshore reserve. By morning, you’ll be bankrupt, Daniel. And a broke father can’t protect a ghost for long.”
