Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Judas

Daniel didn't go to the police. Not yet. In a town like Birch Hollow, where his sister Sarah sat on the municipal board and funded the local police pension, he couldn't be sure who was buying into her narrative. Instead, he took Ethan and Annie straight to his high-security penthouse in the city, employing an elite private medical team to evaluate his son.

The diagnosis cut Daniel to the quick: malnutrition, severe vitamin deficiencies, and psychological trauma, but physically whole. Ethan was alive.

As Ethan slept under the watchful eye of a trusted physician, Daniel stood in his glass-walled study, reviewing his sister's financial records. The pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place with horrifying clarity. Three years ago, Daniel had established a massive trust fund for Ethan, set to mature on the boy's 15th birthday. If Ethan died before then, the entire sum—along with control of the family's logistics empire—would revert to the next living kin: Sarah.

By faking Ethan's death, Sarah had initiated a legal loophole that allowed her to borrow against the future earnings of the trust, embezzling tens of millions to fund her failing luxury real estate developments in Europe.

"She didn't just want the money," Daniel murmured to his security chief, Marcus, who stood by the door. "She wanted to destroy me completely so I would never investigate the discrepancies in the company accounts."

"Sir, we have a problem," Marcus said, looking at a tablet. "Gary Vance didn't just text you. He went straight to Sarah. Our cyber-security team just detected a massive data breach at our corporate headquarters. Someone is using an executive biometric key to drain the offshore accounts right now."

Daniel’s jaw tightened. "Sarah is at the headquarters. She's panicking because she knows the lie is dead."

"What do you want to do?"

"We go down there," Daniel said, his eyes turning to cold flint. "And we show her that some things can't be bought off."

Before they could leave, the penthouse doors burst open. It wasn't the police, and it wasn't Sarah’s thugs. It was Annie’s mother, Clara Miller, battered and bruised, collapsing onto the marble floor.

"Daniel..." Clara gasped, clutching her side. "Sarah... she knows where Ethan is. She didn't just send Gary. She hired professional cleaners. They're on their way to this building right now. They aren't here for the money. They're here to erase the evidence. They're here for the kids."
