Chapter 6 - A Different Kind of Ribbon

Six months later.
The spring sun was warm over Birch Hollow, turning the grass a vibrant, electric green. The gray headstone in the Carter family plot had been changed. The lower half of the stone, where Ethan James Carter—Taken Too Soon had once been carved, had been professionally ground down and polished clean.
Now, it held only one name: Margaret Carter—Beloved Wife and Mother. Forever in Our Hearts.
Daniel stood before the grave, his hands in his pockets. Beside him stood Ethan. The boy had gained weight; his cheeks were flushed with health, and his hair was neatly cut, though the little crescent scar still caught the sunlight. On Daniel’s other side stood Annie and her mother, Clara, who now lived in a beautiful home on the lakeside—a gift from Daniel that ensured they would never have to look for a back door again.
Ethan stepped forward and knelt by his mother's stone. In his hand, he held a massive bouquet of vibrant, fresh-cut peonies—his mother's absolute favorite. They weren't discarded grocery store scraps with bent necks. They were perfect.
But tied around the stems, with a beautifully executed, perfectly balanced knot, was a bright pink ribbon.

Ethan looked up at the sky, a peaceful smile breaking across his face. "We're okay now, Mom," he whispered. "Dad found me."
Daniel placed a hand on his son's shoulder, looking over at Annie, who gave him a bright, knowing wink. The flowers would keep coming every Thursday. Not because they were hiding a tragic secret anymore—but because they had finally brought a broken family all the way home.
