Chapter 4 - The Siege at the Penthouse

The building's alarms began to wail. The lights flickered, plunged into darkness, and then transitioned to the eerie amber glow of the emergency backup system.
"Marcus, lock down the elevators!" Daniel shouted, sprinting toward the guest bedroom where Ethan and Annie were sleeping.
"They've already bypassed the secondary grid, sir!" Marcus yelled back, drawing his weapon. "They're coming up through the service shaft!"
Daniel burst into the bedroom. Ethan was already awake, trembling, holding a terrified Annie behind him. The twelve-year-old boy, despite his trauma, was trying to act as a shield.
"Dad, what's happening?" Ethan cried.
"Listen to me, both of you," Daniel said, kneeling and looking into their eyes. "I lost you once, Ethan. I am never, ever losing you again. You trust me?"
Ethan nodded, wiping a tear. "Yes."
Daniel led them into the master suite, pushing open a hidden panel behind a floor-to-ceiling mirror—a fortified panic room built during his wife's illness. "Stay in here. Do not open this door for anyone but me or Marcus. No matter what you hear outside."
Just as the heavy steel door clicked shut, the glass windows of the penthouse living room shattered inward. Flashbang grenades detonated with deafening roars, filling the air with blinding white light and choking smoke. Three masked operatives, armed with tactical submachine guns, dropped from ropes anchored to the roof.
Marcus fired, dropping the first operative, but a volley of return fire forced him behind a marble pillar. Daniel, utilizing the shadows of his own home, crept around the perimeter. He grabbed a heavy bronze sculpture from a side table.
As one of the gunmen advanced toward the master suite, Daniel sprang from the darkness, slamming the sculpture into the man's helmet, knocking him unconscious. He snatched the operative’s weapon, leveling it at the remaining attacker.
"Drop it!" Daniel roared.
The final gunman looked at his fallen comrades, then at the ferocious, unyielding rage in the billionaire's eyes. He dropped his weapon and raised his hands.

"Who sent you?" Daniel snarled, pressing the barrel against the man's chest.
The mercenary swallowed hard. "The woman... Sarah Carter. She's at the harbor. Private yacht. She's transferring the final assets and leaving the country in one hour. She told us to make sure there was nothing left for you to come home to."
