Chapter 3 - The Offer Written in Blood and Ink

Vincent laid the checkbook flat against his knee, careful not to disturb Sofia, who let out a tiny sigh and burrowed deeper into his chest.
"I don't like surprises, Sophie," Vincent said, his voice dropping an octave, smoothing out into a dangerous, hypnotic cadence. "And I especially don't like liabilities. But you possess one quality that is exceptionally rare in my line of work."
Sophie swallowed hard, her throat raw. "What... what quality?"
"Desperation," Vincent replied smoothly. "Desperate people are predictable. They want survival. They want security for their children. And they don't ask unnecessary questions."
He clicked the gold pen. The sound echoed like a gunshot in the quiet alcove.
"Here is what is going to happen," Vincent commanded, looking up at her with unyielding authority. "You are going to walk back upstairs. You are going to finish your shift with a smile on your face, serving wine to fools who think they own the world. When your shift ends at midnight, you will pack your diaper bag, walk out the back alley, and get into the black Mercedes parked by the dumpster."
"What?" Sophie gasped. "I can't—I have to go home, I have—"
"You have a choice," Vincent interrupted, his tone freezing her in place. "You can continue living in a roach-infested Boston apartment, praying your deadbeat ex doesn't show up, terrified every single day that Vittorio will discover your child and throw you out onto the snow."
He scribbled something rapidly across the check, ripped it out, and held it out between two long, manicured fingers.
"Or," Vincent continued, his eyes burning into hers, "you can take this check for fifty thousand dollars, walk down to that car, and let my men relocate you and your daughter to a safehouse in Chicago where no one will ever touch you, threaten you, or make you beg for scraps again."
Sophie stared at the slip of paper. Fifty thousand dollars. It was more money than she had seen in her entire life. It could pay off every debt, secure a real home, buy groceries, and give Sofia a future she had never dared to dream of.
"Why?" Sophie whispered, the word tearing out of her. "Why would you do this for a stranger? Men like you don't just hand out fortunes for nothing."

Vincent smiled, but there was a profound, chilling sadness behind his amber eyes.
"Because, Sophie... looking at you holding that cheap blue bag outside the kitchen tonight reminded me of someone I failed a long time ago. Consider it a debt paid to the universe." He gently stroked a soft curl on Sofia's head. "Now... do we have a deal?"
