Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Iron Boss

Vincent froze, the heavy crystal decanter hovering inches above his glass. He slowly turned his head, his sharp amber eyes narrowing as he looked at the young waitress standing before him without a hint of fear.

"You think you can boss me around in my own home?" Vincent asked, though there was no real bite in his voice—only a strange, unfamiliar curiosity.

"I think you saved my daughter's life, and mine, and right now you're bleeding on an expensive white rug," Sophie retorted, her tone firm. She picked up a clean linen cloth and a small antiseptic bottle from the medical kit Dante had left on the counter earlier. "Sit down, Vincent. Or I'll call your enforcers and tell them their boss is being a stubborn child."

A low, deep rumble escaped Vincent's chest—a sound that took Sophie a second to realize was actual laughter. It was the first time she had ever heard him laugh, and it completely transformed his stern, terrifying face into something devastatingly handsome.

Slowly, the feared mafia boss surrendered. He walked over and sank heavily into the plush leather sofa, leaning his head back against the cushions and closing his eyes.

Sophie knelt beside him on the floor. Her hands were steady as she dipped the cloth in warm water and gently dabbed at the jagged scratch on his jawline.

Up close, she could see the heavy toll his life took on him. The tension locked in his shoulders, the faint silver scars crisscrossing his forearms beneath his rolled-up sleeves, the profound loneliness radiating from a man who trusted no one.

"Why do you do it?" Sophie whispered, her fingers lingering gently near his jaw. "Why run all of this? Why carry the weight of the entire underworld on your shoulders?"

Vincent didn't open his eyes immediately. When he did, his amber gaze was locked onto hers, so intense it felt like a physical touch.

"Because power is the only shield against betrayal, Sophie," Vincent answered quietly. "In my world, if you show weakness for a single second, you die. If you love someone, they become a target. That's why I never allowed myself to care about anything... until a messy, desperate waitress walked into my private cellar with a baby who wasn't afraid of my rings."

Sophie's breath caught in her throat. The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with an unspoken electricity that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with a sudden, overwhelming pull.

Vincent slowly raised his hand, his large, warm fingers gently brushing against Sophie’s cheek, tracing the line of her jawbone with infinite tenderness.

"You shouldn't have come to Chicago, Sophie," he murmured, his voice dropping to a seductive whisper. "Because now that you're here... I don't think I'll ever be able to let you go."
