Chapter 7 - The O'Connor Trap

The idyllic bubble of the penthouse shattered three nights later with the deafening sound of a silenced gunshot echoing through the 42nd-floor hallway.
Sophie bolted upright in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. In the adjacent room, Sofia began to wail, startled by the noise.
Before Sophie could even put her slippers on, the bedroom door flew open. Dante stood there, his face pale beneath his dark hair, a submachine gun clutched tightly in his hands.
"Get up, Miss Miller! Now!" Dante barked, his voice laced with absolute panic. "The O'Connor syndicate breached the private elevator shaft. They bypassed our security grid. They're on this floor."
"Where is Vincent?" Sophie screamed over Sofia's crying, grabbing her baby in her arms and clutching her to her chest.
"Boss is in the downstairs study! He's cut off!" Dante yelled, grabbing Sophie's arm and shoving her toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind the master closet bookshelf. "Get inside! Do not come out for any reason, no matter what you hear!"
"No! I'm not leaving him!" Sophie protested, tears streaming down her face.
"Move!"
Dante slammed the steel panic room door shut, locking it automatically from the outside.
Inside the pitch-black, climate-controlled bunker, Sophie held Sofia tight, rocking her frantically as muffled gunfights, shouting, and the shattering of glass echoed from the main living area. Every loud bang felt like a knife twisting in her gut. Vincent—the man who had protected her, who had shown her a rare, hidden tenderness—was out there fighting an army alone.
Fifteen agonizing minutes passed. To Sophie, it felt like a lifetime.
Then, the heavy steel door hissed open.
A flashlight beam cut through the darkness. Sophie flinched, shielding Sofia with her body.
A tall figure stepped into the panic room. Blood stained the right shoulder of his black shirt. His knuckles were raw and bruised, and a deep gash bled freely down his forehead. But in his right hand, he held a heavy silver pistol, and his amber eyes burned with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury.
"Vincent!" Sophie sobbed, lunging forward and throwing her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest despite the blood.
Vincent dropped his weapon, wrapping his strong, bloodied arms around Sophie and Sofia, pulling them both into an unbreakable, desperate embrace.
"They're gone," Vincent rasped, pressing his face into Sophie's hair. "All of them. No one touches my family. Do you hear me? No one."
Sophie pulled back, her eyes wide with shock. "Family?"
Vincent cupped her face with his bloodied hand, his amber eyes fierce, tender, and utterly unyielding. "I spent my whole life building an empire of fear, Sophie. But standing there in the dark, wondering if those bastards hurt you or my little girl... I realized something terrifying."

He leaned down, pressing his lips softly against her forehead before whispering against her skin:
"You are my kingdom now, Sophie. And I will burn the entire world to the ground before I let anyone take you away."
