Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EMPIREThe interrogation room at the central precinct smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and institutional despair. Samuel sat at the metal table, his designer suit wrinkled, his hands cuffed to the bolted loop in the center. Across from him sat Detective Martinez and an investigator from the state financial crimes unit.

"Let’s go over this one more time, Mr. Sanders," the financial investigator said, sliding a thick stack of documents across the table. "According to these filings, the Sanders Estate, the venture capital accounts, and all subsidiary properties do not belong to you or your mother. They are held in an irrevocable trust managed by Veritas Legal Partners, with your wife as the sole primary beneficiary and executor."

"That's a forgery!" Samuel shouted, slamming his cuffed hands onto the table, rattling the metal. "She tricked me! She made me sign documents under duress!"

"Duress?" Martinez raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair. "We pulled the digital signature logs and video verification files from the notary public who oversaw the transfer. Your wife sat in a conference room with three independent witnesses and recorded a video statement explaining her exact reasons for reclaiming her estate. Shall we play it for you?"

Samuel slumped back in his chair, the fierce arrogance completely draining out of him. He looked smaller, pathetic, stripped of the wealth and status that had fueled his cruelty. "She... she planned to leave me."

"She planned to survive you," Martinez corrected bluntly. "And now, thanks to the high-definition footage from your kitchen and the medical reports confirming third-degree chemical burns, you aren't just looking at a bitter divorce. You’re looking at attempted murder, domestic terrorism, and conspiracy."

While Samuel was breaking down in interrogation room B, Joyce was experiencing her own meltdown two doors down. Confined to a holding cell, she was screaming at the top of her lungs, demanding her lawyer, her friends, and her morning tea. But no one was coming.

For three years, they had operated under the delusion that they were the masters of their domain. They believed that by isolating me from my colleagues, cutting off my phone calls, and convincing the world I was mentally unstable, they had rendered me invisible.

They forgot rule number one of financial fraud and high-stakes litigation: Never back a professional predator into a corner unless you are prepared to be devoured.

My phone, safely stored in a secure locker at the hospital under Dr. Stone’s direct supervision, buzzed softly. A notification popped up on the encrypted screen: Trust assets successfully frozen. Phoenix vault accessed. Local authorities notified.

I lay back against the hospital pillows, watching the rain streak down the windowpane outside. The physical pain was immense, but the clarity was intoxicating. The trap was sprung, the jaws were locked, and there was no escape.
