Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of the Fallen King

The door to the crumbling third-floor apartment flew open, slamming against the peeling drywall. Amelia collapsed into the room, her lungs burning like ice, her bare left foot bleeding from a jagged cut she hadn't even felt until now. She was trembling so violently she could barely turn the deadbolt.
"Amelia?"
Vincent Cavalli stepped out of the dimly lit kitchen. The man who had once ruled Chicago with an iron fist wore a faded grey henley, his dark hair messy, a shadow of stubble tracing his sharp jawline. To the outside world, he was a broken king, stripped of his millions, his penthouse, and his army by a sweeping federal indictment.
But as his dark eyes swept over her—noticing her missing shoe, the snow caked to her ankle, and the sheer terror in her eyes—the docile, defeated look vanished. The apex predator returned in a heartbeat.
"What happened?" he demanded, crossing the small room in two long strides. His large hands caught her shoulders, grounding her.
"Vanessa..." Amelia choked out, her hand instinctively flying to her stomach, shielding the secret she carried. "She’s outside. With Victor Falcone. Vincent, you have to leave. You have to leave right now!"
Vincent’s gaze narrowed, his grip tightening slightly, though he was careful not to hurt her. "Calm down, piccola. Tell me exactly what you heard."
"They think you’re broke. They think you have nothing left!" Amelia sobbed, the words tumbling out in a frantic rush. "Victor said a ruined boss is dangerous. He said you might trade information to get your fortune back. They’re sending two men tomorrow night. At eleven o'clock. They’re going to stage a robbery... Vincent, they're going to kill you!"
She expected panic. She expected the desperate anger of a man who realized his fiancé and his most trusted Underboss had betrayed him.
Instead, a chilling silence settled over the room. Vincent’s face didn't crack. He didn't blink. Slowly, a dark, terrifyingly calm smile spread across his lips.
"Eleven o'clock," Vincent murmured, his voice smooth as silk and cold as the Chicago winter outside. "Good to know."
Amelia stared at him, bewildered. "Vincent, did you hear me? They are coming to take your life!"
"Let them come," Vincent whispered. He looked down at her bleeding foot, his expression instantly softening into something fiercely protective. Without a word, he scooped her up into his arms. Amelia gasped, clutching his neck as he carried her to the worn-out sofa.
As he knelt before her, gently wiping the blood from her foot with a damp towel, Amelia felt her heart hammering against her ribs. She loved this man—had loved him in secret for the two years she served as his housekeeper. When his world crashed down a week ago, Vanessa had looked at him with disgust. Amelia had looked at him and seen the man who once paid for her mother’s medical bills in secret, the man who treated her with quiet respect when the rest of the high society ignored her existence.
And three months ago, on a stormy night before the feds raided his mansion, a moment of raw, shared vulnerability had led them to each other's arms. A single night of passion that left Amelia pregnant with the Cavalli heir. An heir Vincent knew nothing about.
"Why did you stay, Amelia?" Vincent asked softly, not looking up as he carefully bandaged her foot. "Vanessa fled the moment the bank accounts were frozen. The rest of the staff quit. Why are you risking your life for a man who has nothing?"
"Because you're not nothing to me," she whispered, tears blurring her vision.
Vincent paused. He lifted his head, his piercing dark eyes locking onto hers. There was an intense, burning hunger in his gaze that made her breath hitch. He reached up, his thumb brushing a stray tear from her cheek.
"You have a good heart, Amelia. Too good for this world," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave. "But you shouldn't have run through the snow. Not in your condition."
Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. Her blood ran cold for the second time that night. "W-what do you mean?"
Vincent’s gaze dropped significantly to her hand, which was still resting protectively over her lower abdomen.
"Did you really think I wouldn't notice?" Vincent asked, a dangerous, possessive warmth flooding his eyes. "You've been nauseous every morning. You've changed your posture. And my child is growing inside you. Did you think you could hide my own blood from me, Amelia?"
Before Amelia could answer, a heavy, deliberate knock echoed through the front door.
Amelia stiffened, her eyes wide with horror. Vincent slowly stood up, the warmth vanishing from his face, replaced by the terrifying aura of the King of Chicago. He reached into the back of his waistband and pulled out a sleek, black Glock. He hadn't lost his weapons. He hadn't lost his edge.
"Stay here," Vincent commanded softly.
