Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Venom

"You think you won, Vincent?" Victor laughed, a bloody, manic sound as two of Vincent’s enforcers pinned his arms behind his back. "You think this maid is safe? Ask your boy Marco what he found in her apartment's records before she came to work for you."
Vincent’s grip on Amelia’s waist tightened. He glanced at Marco, his most loyal captain. For the first time in ten years, Marco avoided Vincent’s gaze, his face pale.
"Marco," Vincent growled, the dangerous tone returning to his voice. "What is he talking about?"
"Boss..." Marco hesitated, stepping forward, pulling a weathered manila folder from his jacket. "We ran a deep background check on Amelia when she was first hired, but someone scrubbed her real identity. We just bypassed the encryption on Victor's personal safe tonight. Amelia isn't just a orphan from the North Side."
Amelia’s heart stopped. She looked at Vincent, then at the folder. "Vincent, I don't know what he's talking about! I swear!"
Victor sneered, spitting blood onto the stage. "Her real name is Amelia Falcone, Vincent! She is my brother's daughter. The brother you executed five years ago for treason! She’s a plant! She came into your house to avenge her father, and now she’s carrying your kid to steal your entire empire from the inside!"
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.
Vanessa, still on her knees, let out a screech of laughter. "A snake! You threw me away for a snake, Vincent! She played you!"
Vincent looked down at Amelia. His eyes were unreadable, a terrifying void of darkness. The warmth that had been there just moments ago evaporated.
"Vincent, no!" Amelia cried, tears flooding her eyes. She grabbed his lapels, desperately searching his face. "My father died when I was a child! I never knew his family! I didn't know he was a Falcone! I came to work for you because I needed a job to pay for my mother's chemotherapy! I swear to you, on our baby's life, I didn't know!"
Vincent didn't speak. He gently but firmly unclasped her hands from his jacket, stepping back. The distance felt like a thousand miles.
"Take Victor and Vanessa to the basement," Vincent ordered Marco, his voice chillingly devoid of emotion. "And lock Amelia in the master suite at the mansion. No phone. No visitors. Until I verify the truth."
"Vincent, please look at me!" Amelia screamed as two guards gently but firmly guided her away from the stage. She didn't fight them; she couldn't. The emotional whiplash was too much, a sharp pain shooting through her abdomen. She gasped, clutching her stomach as she was led out of the glittering ballroom, leaving the Mafia King standing alone under the bright lights, looking more ruthless—and more broken—than ever before.
Three hours later, Amelia was confined to the massive, luxurious master bedroom of the Cavalli mansion—the very mansion that was supposed to be seized. The irony was suffocating. She paced the floor, weeping, clutching her stomach. He thinks I betrayed him. He thinks our entire relationship was a lie.
The heavy mahogany door unlocked.
Vincent walked in. He had taken off his jacket, his white shirt rolled up at the sleeves, looking exhausted and lethal. In his hand, he held the file.
Amelia stood frozen by the window. "Are you going to kill me?" she whispered, her voice cracking.
Vincent walked over to her slowly. He stopped just inches away, looking down at her tear-stained face. He raised the file, and right before her eyes, he ripped it in half. Then in quarters. He threw the pieces into the roaring fireplace.
"I spent the last three hours digging up the bones of the past," Vincent said softly. "Your father was indeed a Falcone. But he hid you and your mother from the family because he wanted you to have a clean life. He died because Victor betrayed him to me five years ago."
Amelia gasped, covering her mouth.
"You didn't know, Amelia. I know when a person is lying to me, and your heart is too pure to hold that kind of darkness," Vincent said, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out, pulling her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair. "Forgive me for doubting you, even for a second. The world I live in makes me see ghosts everywhere."
Amelia clung to him, sobbing out her relief. "I love you, Vincent. I don't care about the money or the empire. I just want you."

"I know," Vincent whispered, kissing her deeply, a promise of absolute devotion. "And tomorrow, the world will know exactly what happens to anyone who dares to touch my queen."
Chapter 5 Hook: The misunderstanding is resolved, but as Vincent and Amelia share a moment of peace, a sudden explosion rocks the eastern wing of the mansion. The security alarms blare, and Marco’s voice screams over the intercom: "Boss! Victor escaped the basement! He has a bomb!"
