Chapter 2 - The Mask of Deception

"Vincent, darling!" Vanessa stepped into the cramped apartment, shaking the snow from her coat with an exaggerated sigh of disgust. "God, this place smells like poverty. I brought Victor with me. We need to talk about our legal strategy. We can't live like this anymore."

Victor Falcone stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the small apartment. When his gaze landed on Amelia sitting on the couch, his eyes narrowed into slits. Amelia felt a cold sweat break out across her neck. Did he recognize her from the alley? Did he see her face before she ran?

"Amelia," Victor said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. "You're up late for a maid. And you're missing a shoe."

Amelia’s heart pounded so hard she was certain they could hear it. She tried to pull her dress down to cover her bandaged foot, but Vincent stepped seamlessly into Victor’s line of sight, cutting off the Underboss's view.

"She dropped a glass bottle in the alley taking out the trash and cut herself," Vincent said smoothly, his tone perfectly balancing the annoyance of a frustrated man with the carelessness of someone who didn't suspect a thing. "I was just cleaning it up. Since when does the Underboss of the Cavalli family interrogate my house staff?"

Victor held Vincent’s gaze for a long, agonizing moment before forcing a tight, respectful smile. "Just looking out for you, boss. The streets aren't safe anymore. Especially not for someone who has lost... everything."

The underlying insult was palpable. Vanessa walked over to Vincent, wrapping her arms around his neck, though she kept her body at a distance, as if his cheap clothes might stain her. "Vincent, Victor is right. The legal fees are draining us. I think we should postpone the wedding. Just until you... figure things out."

Amelia watched from the couch, her fists clenching. The hypocrisy. Only twenty minutes ago, this woman had told Victor to "make sure it's quick." Now she was playing the concerned fiancé.

Vincent smiled, a hollow, defeated expression that looked so real it terrified Amelia. "If that's what you want, Vanessa. I understand. A luxury bird doesn't belong in a cage like this."

"I'm glad you're being reasonable," Vanessa purred, kissing his cheek. "We'll leave you to rest. Come on, Victor."

As they turned to leave, Victor stopped at the door. He turned around, his eyes locking onto Amelia once more. "Take care of that foot, Amelia. It's a dangerous neighborhood. People get hurt when they wander into places they don't belong."

The threat was clear. The door clicked shut, and the apartment fell silent once more.

Amelia collapsed back against the cushions, gasping for air. "Vincent... Victor knows. He knows someone was in the alley. He suspects me."

Vincent walked back over to her, his face completely devoid of the weakness he had shown Vanessa. He tossed the Glock onto the coffee table and pulled out a encrypted satellite phone from a hidden compartment beneath the kitchen counter.

"Let him suspect," Vincent said, dialing a number. "He thinks he's playing chess with a dying man. He doesn't realize I built the board."

"Vincent, what are you doing?" Amelia asked, watching him.

The phone connected. Vincent spoke into the receiver, his voice commanding and resonant with absolute power. "Marco. Activate Phase Two. The rats have taken the bait. Tomorrow night at eleven, clear the perimeter of the 5th District. I want Victor's hitmen captured alive. And prepare the grand ballroom at the Drake Hotel for tomorrow night."

Vincent hung up. He looked at Amelia, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire.

"You asked me why I didn't panic, Amelia," Vincent said, walking over to her and gently taking her hands. "The government didn't seize my assets. I moved them. Six billion dollars, transferred to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland months ago. I created a fake federal investigation to see who in my inner circle was loyal, and who was a parasite waiting for me to bleed."

Amelia gasped, her mind spinning. "The trial... the poverty... it was all a lie?"

"A test," Vincent corrected, lifting her chin so she had to look at him. "And Vanessa failed miserably. Victor failed. The only one who stayed by my side, the only one who risked her life to protect me, was you." His eyes drifted down to her stomach. "You, and our child."

He leaned down, pressing a soft, fierce kiss to her forehead. "Tomorrow night, the world will think the King of Chicago is dead. But they are about to witness a resurrection. And you, Amelia, are going to be at my side."

Chapter 2 Hook: The poverty was a trap, and Vincent is richer than ever. But as the clock ticks toward 11:00 PM, Amelia realizes that Victor isn't just planning a robbery—he has a backup plan that involves her.
