Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Rain

"Move, Ethan! Please!"
Sarah’s voice was a panicked hiss. She scooped Lily into her arms, the little girl stirring and letting out a soft, confused whimper. "Mommy? Is it him?"
"Shh, baby, go back to sleep. Mommy's got you," Sarah whispered, her eyes locked on the black SUV.
I didn't move for a fraction of a second. My brain was misfiring, trying to connect the dots of a reality that made absolutely no sense. Julian Vance.
He was the wealthy real estate mogul who had hired Melissa to design his penthouse suite. The man whose name I found on hotel receipts crumpled at the bottom of my wife's designer purse. The man who had looked at me during our brief confrontational meeting during the divorce proceedings with the smug satisfaction of a predator who had taken what was mine simply because he could.
And now, he was sitting outside a quiet restaurant, staring at my blind date.
"Ethan, do you know him?" Sarah’s voice cracked as we hurried toward the back exit of the restaurant, bypassing the front doors entirely.
"We need to get to my car," I said, my voice hollow, adrenaline flooding my veins. "My truck is parked in the back alley. Follow me."
The rain was coming down harder now, a cold, biting sheet that soaked through my navy shirt in seconds. I shielded Lily with my jacket as we ran down the narrow alleyway. My hands shook as I unlocked the Ford F-150. I helped Sarah buckle Lily into the back seat before sliding into the driver's seat and locking the doors.
I started the engine, my eyes darting to the rearview mirror.
There, idling at the mouth of the alley, was the black SUV. Its headlights flickered once, twice—a deliberate provocation.
"Tell me," I demanded, turning to Sarah as I threw the truck into reverse, navigating the tight alleyway to exit on the opposite street. "Sarah, who is he to you?"
Sarah was shaking violently, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. "He's Lily's father," she whispered, the words sounding like a confession to a crime. "And he's going to take her away from me."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "Julian Vance is Lily's father?"
Sarah gasped, her head snapping toward me. "How do you know his name? I never told you his name."
I steered the truck onto the main highway, my knuckles white on the steering wheel. The black SUV didn't follow us immediately, but I knew it was only a matter of time.
"Because," I said, the bitter taste of old ashes rising in my throat, "Julian Vance is the man my wife left me for."
Sarah stared at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of horror and realization. "No... oh my god, no. Melissa? You were married to Melissa?"
"You know her?"
May you like
"She's his fiancée now," Sarah whispered, burying her face in her hands. "And they are trying to prove I'm an unfit mother so they can take Lily. They want a perfect family portrait for his mayoral campaign, Ethan. And Melissa... Melissa wants a child she doesn't have to carry."
CHAPTER 2 HOOK: As we pulled up to my house, the headlights of my truck illuminated my front porch. The front door was wide open, swaying gently in the wind, and my golden retriever, Cooper, was nowhere to be seen.
