Chapter 5 - The Descent into the Abyss

"Under Section 42 of the Family Code, we are executing an emergency protective order," the lead social worker, a stern woman with a clipboard, said coldly. "The child, Lily Vance, is to be placed in temporary foster care pending a fitness hearing."

"No!" Sarah shrieked, throwing her body in front of Lily, who had run into the hallway, crying in terror. "You can't do this! I am her mother!"

"Ma'am, we have a sworn affidavit from a licensed psychologist stating that you are exposing the child to a hostile, mentally unstable environment," the police officer said, his hand resting on his holster. "Please step aside, or we will arrest you for obstructing justice."

"Ethan, help me!" Sarah screamed as they gently but firmly pulled Lily away from her.

"Mommy! Mommy!" Lily wailed, her little sparkly shoes dragging on the hardwood floor as the social worker carried her toward a waiting sedan. "Ethan! Help!"

The door slammed shut. The sound of Lily’s crying faded into the rainy morning.

Sarah fell to her knees, screaming, her hands clawing at the rug. I held her, my own tears hot against my eyes, a burning, venomous rage threatening to consume me.

"They took her," Sarah gasped, her chest heaving. "They took my baby."

"We are getting her back," I whispered fiercely into her hair. "Today. No more courts. No more waiting."

I looked at Claire. "Take Sarah to your house. Lock the doors. Keep the dog with you. If anyone comes, call the police and make a scene."

"What are you going to do, Ethan?" Claire asked, her eyes wide with terror.

"I'm going to end this," I said.

By 9:00 p.m., the rain had turned into a torrential downpour. I stood in the shadow of the Vance Enterprises building, wearing a dark raincoat, the brass key heavy in my pocket.

The building was dark. The security guard was at the front desk, but I knew the back service entrance bypassed the main lobby cameras. I slipped the key into the lock.

Click.

The door slid open.

I navigated the darkened corridors with the familiarity of a man who had designed half of these office layouts. I reached the penthouse suite—Julian’s personal office.

Using a USB drive Claire had prepared, I plugged it into Julian's desktop computer. The screen illuminated his smug face on a screensaver. I bypassed the security using an old administrative password Melissa had stupidly kept identical to her childhood dog's name.

The progress bar crawled. 10%... 40%... 80%...

Suddenly, the lights flicked on.

"I must admit, Ethan. I expected you to be a coward, but this? This is delightfully desperate."

I turned around slowly.

Standing in the doorway was Julian Vance, a loaded revolver in his hand, his eyes gleaming with psychotic amusement. And standing right behind him, looking stunning in a red silk trench coat, was my ex-wife, Melissa.

"You really thought you could play hero, Ethan?" Melissa sneered, stepping into the room. "You were always a pathetic, mediocre man. Did you really think you could beat us?"

"I don't need to beat you, Melissa," I said, my hand slowly creeping toward my pocket, where my phone was secretly broadcasting a live audio feed to Claire and our lawyer. "I just need the truth. Why Lily? You don't care about being a mother."

Melissa laughed—a sharp, grating sound. "A mother? God, no. But Julian's grandfather left a thirty-million-dollar trust fund that can only be accessed by Julian's biological child when they turn seven. If Lily is in Sarah's custody, we don't get a dime. But if Julian has full custody... we control the trust."

"So it's just about the money," I said, staring at them.

"It's always about the money, darling," Melissa smiled.

Julian raised the gun, aiming it directly at my chest. "Now, give me the USB drive, Ethan. Or this becomes a tragic story about a mentally unstable ex-husband who broke into my office and had to be neutralized in self-defense."

CHAPTER 5 HOOK: As Julian squeezed the trigger, a loud crash echoed from the hallway. The double doors of the office burst open, and a team of FBI agents flood the room, weapons drawn. But the real shock wasn't the police—it was the man walking in behind them, holding a medical file. It was Julian’s personal fertility doctor.
